Sinn Sisamuth’s granddaughter releases her first original song on Pleng by Smart Axiata

Sin Setsochhata, the youngest granddaughter of the “Golden-voiced Emperor” Sinn Sisamuth, is following in her grandfather’s footsteps as she has just released her first original song.

The song, Realization, was written by Setsochhata, who recently signed with the local music label Klapyahandz, and is based on her own life. It is now available on Pleng, a music-streaming service owned by Smart Axiata. Soon, she will release two more songs inspired by her own life on the platform, one of which is in English.

“I am very nervous about stepping into the industry,” she said during a press conference on Thursday. “I will keep doing my best, but at the end of the day, it depends on the support from the audience.”

Setsochhata, the 27-year-old daughter of the late singer Sin Chanchhaya, is known amongst young Cambodians for singing covers of her grandfather’s songs on social media. However, she has previously refused offers from music labels because she knew how hard life as an artist in Cambodia can be, after observing her father in the industry. Instead, Setsochhata went on to study media and communication in college, hoping to become a filmmaker and writer.

However, after the respective deaths of her father in 2014 and her brother Sin Sethakol last year, who was yet another singer in the family, Sethsochhata decided to carry on her family’s legacy. Despite this, she does not want to live in the shadow of her family, not even her famous grandfather.

U.S. Ambassador chats with Sin Sisamuth’s granddaughter about Cambodian music

U.S. Ambassador to Cambodia W. Patrick Murphy and singer Sin Setsochhata, granddaughter of Cambodian musical legend Sin Sisamuth, recorded a conversation about Cambodian music and her interest in preserving her grandfather’s legacy.

The 20-minute conversation, produced by the Cambodian Broadcasting Service, was live-streamed on U.S. Embassy Phnom Penh’s Facebook page on Feb. 11.

Ambassador Murphy was struck by how beloved Sin Sisamuth remains in Cambodia, so many years after his tragic death. “I hear his songs on some radio stations, see his pictures in restaurants and some boutique hotels,” the Ambassador said. “His songs still resonate with old and young people these days.”

Singer Sochhata said she never met her grandfather, but learned about him through her grandmother who lives in Stung Treng province.
