Kiwi faces 4 years jail for Buddha ad images in Burma
Apparently the trial is now/soon - saw it on TV, there's not much online. The kiwi guy and 2 Burmese associates are on trial for posting an "inappropriate" image of Buddha on FB - promotion for a drinks night.
Buddhist nationalism is also on the rise - the opening of the world through internet and social media coincides with a new conservatism. Also, weak govts rely on promoting national values (even extremist) to create a consensus and shore up their power.
It seems insane that they will go to jail for this :

Bad days ahead - think I'll have another beer.

I read somewhere that he had been sentenced to 2 years.
I will try and find the article and post it.

Here it is:
A New Zealand bar manager has been found guilty of insulting religion in Myanmar by using an image of the Buddha to promote a cheap drinks night.
He and two co-accused have been all sentenced to two and a half years in prison.

These posts almost makes it sound like the law is new or something. It's not. The laws were written before the Kiwi showed up. And you expect the country to bend to the Kiwi? Classical colonialist thinking. "Social media coincides with a new conservatism"? Please. Read the law and follow it.
And what on earth is religious nationalism?

It would be one thing if he actually insulted Buddhism, but a drawing of the Buddha with headphones on is something that only oversensitive zealots could mistake for an insult.

I don't think anybody had a problem with the headphones. Alcohol is not compatible with buddhism. Don't use it to promote your bar. I think that's fair play.

Do you mean that they sell this drink in Myanmar? Unless they do I don't see your point.StroppyChops wrote:Got it.
