Nobody said "Cambodians don't have money", some are obviously stinking rich. However a whole lot live in poverty. Have you ever been to a remote village or one of the slums around the city? They aren't called "wats" either, wats are functioning pagodas.

Just imagine the big bosses daughter has bought a place in the most expensive part of London for her vacation.

All me Khmer pals (yeah, about a dozen!), have visited Angkor Wat at least once.
Send me pictures of them posin' in front of the ole place, & overall seem proud to show their country's heritage..

I've met a few who haven't been, but I'd wager that even counting villagers and so on, probably 80-85% have been. It's in their flag after all.

If you ask most Cambodians I think they would all like to go there at least once. ( That's the opinion I got based on people I know - I haven't asked "most Cambodians".)
I went there once with a Khmer friend who had never been there before. It was fun. He was blown away and took about 100 selfies to post to his friends.
I've never believed the old ot mien lot excuse.
I think it also means, I'm not interested, I can't be bothered or I'd rather spend the money on a new iPhone.
Maybe?.
You obviously have a very narrow experience in Cambodia if you believe that. There are a large number who struggle just to make ends meet and never go anywhere.
You are absolutely correct about large numbers of people that have very little And struggle to survive, I was thinking more about Lexus owners that use ot mien loy as an excuse.

A couple of them were hookers. The others were Cambodian co-workers, employees, and friends.

Here’s a classic Cambodian reply when a Barang asks if they’ve been out of the country:

German feminazi: “Have you gone to other countries yet or do you plan to ride to other countries?”

Srey Roth: “Uh not yet going out of the country because I’m not yet saved enough money to going out. I still have to work a lot and don’t have a lot of time off from work. “

At 21:25

She just forgot to mention her visits to Vietnam, Korea, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, and Bali. Made sure to immediately claim “Ot Mean Loi” and then plugs her future dreams of riding around ten countries in the world.

No idea who Johnny Rotten is, but the open air red British bus was loads of fun. So was the London Eye, the cruise on the Thames, HMS Belfast. So much to do all crammed into 1 day.

But expected traditional English food everywhere. Instead was eating Fried Chicken, rice, and curry.
