Prince Norodom Yuvaneath, the eldest son of the late King Norodom Sihanouk and half -brother to King Norodom Sihamoni, has succumbed to his illness at the age of 77 in the US yesterday.

His death has been mourned by all members of the Royal family as well as the Cambodian people who have great respect for the prince.

“The royal family is deeply saddened by the death of King Norodom Yuvaneath, a personal adviser to the King [Norodom Sihamoni], who passed away at the age of 77,” King Nordom Sihamoni wrote on his official Facebook page today.

Prime Minister HE has also expressed his condolences to the passing of Prince Yuvaneath.

“On this sad occasion, my wife and I would like to convey our heartfelt condolences to the Royal family,” the premier said in a letter to the Royal family. “The loss of Norodom Yuvaneath is not only the loss of a faithful husband and father but also a patriotic royal family member who embraced the nation, the religion and the King.”

Born in October 1943, Prince Norodom Yuvaneath is first son of the late King of Cambodia, Norodom Sihanouk and Princess Sisowath Pongsanmoni, which makes him half-brother of King Norodom Sihamoni. He was educated at Lycée Sisowath and spoke French and English, in addition to the native Khmer.

In 1959, he was Cambodia’s representative at the “World Scout Jamboree” in the Philippines and had also accompanied his father on countless missions.

When General Lon Nol led a coup to overthrow King Norodom Sihanouk, he and his family were in Singapore on a visit and was unable to return to Cambodia. The prince fled to China and lived there until 1975, then moved to Hong Kong until 1980 after which he went to the United States and worked for the US Surgical Corporation for more than 14 years.

Personal life:
In 1957, under the direction of socialist-leaning Prince Norodom Sihanouk, the Ankar Khamarak Kayarith was transformed into the "Royal Socialist Khmer Youth", with Sihanouk himself serving as president of the state ruled organization, now controlled by the Royal government. The 2,000 members and the leaders of Cambodian Scouting were permitted by the government to carry on activities. Scouts and Scout leaders attended the World Jamboree in 1959 in the Philippines, among them Prince Norodom Yuvaneath. Soon after, Prince Norodom Sihanouk announced the dissolution of the Cambodian Boy Scout Association, whose members were subsequently integrated into the JSRK, a government sponsored national socialist youth movement.

Norodom Yuvaneath married Yin Kim in June 1962. In 1970 after the coup by General Lon Nol, the Norodom family fled to Beijing where they lived until 1980 when Yuvaneath moved his family to Connecticut in the United States. Yuvaneath has three children:

HRH Prince Norodom Veakchearavouth
HRH Princess Norodom Pekina, who still lives in Connecticut and works for Timex[1]
HRH Princess Norodom Yuveakdevi

He was educated at the prestigious Lycée Sisowath. In addition to his native Khmer, the prince also speaks French and English.

By Brittani Barger
25th January 2021

Cambodia’s Prince Norodom Yuvaneath has been cremated in the United States. The 77-year-old died on 13 January and was the half-brother to Cambodia’s monarch, King Norodom Sihamoni and the son of the late King Norodom Sihanouk.

The Prince resided in the United States with his family and died in a hospice in Branford, Connecticut. His cremation took place at Lakeview Cemetery in Bridgeport, Connecticut.

The cremation ceremony was in two parts. The first part consisted of a morning vigil with the cremation following, and the second part was a Buddhist ceremony. The Prince’s family in the US was in attendance, and the Cambodian government was represented by the Cambodian UN Ambassador in New York.

A Buddhist memorial service was held for the Prince in Cambodia last week in the Royal Palace.

The King’s official Facebook announced the Prince’s death saying, “The Royal Family is deeply saddened by the death of King Norodom Yuvaneath, a personal adviser to the King [Norodom Sihamoni], who passed away at the age of 77.”
