American ex-pat dying in Cambodia....
Hi Friends,
My brother died about 2 weeks ago....he was living in Cambodia for 6 years. No will. I have worked out most of his affairs with the American Embassy. If he had any bank accounts in Cambodia how best to close them out? How do we as a family approach finalizing his banking affairs?
Thanks

If you find any pass books or other evidence of an account, you may (or may not) be able to get a payout based on next of kinship but you'd probably need some legal document, such as a US grant of probate.Broncomandan wrote: ↑Sat Jan 02, 2021 12:35 pm Hi Friends,

Approaching banks on spec, showing his name and asking if he had an account is not going to elicit a response AFAIK.

Hi there. Sorry for your loss.
Have a read of this recent thread: ask-the-expats-questions-answers/bequea ... ls%20banks
It seems like it might be difficult to retrieve any funds from your brother's accounts, unfortunately.

Best of luck to you. Also, can you let us know how it goes?

Re: American ex-pat dying in Cambodia....
I know an American that has a law firm in Phnom Penh. He has been here about 30 years. I will ask him today if he can help or provide the contact for someone that can help you. I will post this information this evening on this post. Sorry for your loss. Cheers.

It depends on the deceased's banking arrangements. In my case my ABA account and my Transferwise account are linked online to a Bank of New Zealand account. In the event of my passing my daughter can just transfer the funds online from my overseas accounts back to my BNZ account using my passwords etc and from there just do a bank transfer into her account. Hopefully she will actually wait until I am gone before doing this.
