The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) said on Friday that at least 971 children (nearly 1,000 babies) would be born in Cambodia on New Year’s Day.

Foroogh Foyouzat, UNICEF representative in Cambodia, who said this in a statement, added that the children would be among a cohort of 371,504 babies to be born around the world the same day.

According to the fund, the Cambodian babies are predicted to have a higher life expectancy than the previous generations, at 81.2 years.

“We are excited that we will welcome a thousand beautiful new babies into Cambodia this New Year’s Day,” Ms Foyouzat said.

“2020 has been a challenging year for all, especially children.

“Yet, Cambodia was successful in containing the pandemic and keeping Coronavirus (COVID-19) cases lower than most countries.

“We are hopeful that the same trend can be maintained.

Yeah, approximately nine months after Khmer New Year... Was discussing this after my FB feed had a spike in numbers. That's also the default date that FB gives, I believe.

But a disproportionate number of my local friends and acquaintances have birthdays on significant dates. Independence Day, etc. Some older mates told me their family book was lost during the bad times so when they applied for passports they were told to pick a day.

Life expectancy of 81,2 years differs a lot for what other organizations report:

UNDP: 69,6 (2018)
WHO: 68,7 (2015)
UN: 67,6 (2010-2015)
CIA: 64,9 (2017)

Old friends in Dhaka had similar issues. (People now in their 30s/40s)

As the story goes.
With birth certificates being nigh on non existent, and birth records being rather haphazardly recorded, High school certificates were an official record of Date of Birth.
Parents may well have known what it is, but it was down to the school to record it. A lazy teacher might simply run off multiple copies of one from, with all entries made except name. So all students in a class might have the same date of birth, skewing their age by anything from 12months, to years. High school certificate (of attendance) gets an ID card. ID card gets the Passport. Never a problem until it comes to passport and visa applications.
