Until Xi took over in 2012, I think a lot of people really believed that China was opening up and moving in a positive direction. Had Xi not taken power, perhaps Hong Kong would still be a beacon of freedom and prosperity, China would be charming its neighbors instead of swelling against them, and COVID would have remained hidden away in a bat cave.

China was country of the peasants in the 70-80s. Than western neoliberalists moved manufacturing to China in a gasp for more profits which resulted in millions of lost jobs in the west and opportunity for China to rise. And now those same people are shouting: China is your enemy!
Free market was ok when USA and the west had advantage of it, now when China is economic and science giant is dangerous for national security? China just copied what Uncle Sam is doing around the world. US uses the strength of the world’s reserve currency, the dollar, for geo-economic blackmail. Why sanction against European companies who are involved in completion of Nord Stream 2 Baltic Sea pipeline? Because EU want to buy cheaper Russian oil instead of overpriced American? Tariffs on Airbus? Doesnt American government subsidies Boeing as well? USA is your friend only if they profit from you, they are not selective with allies. If you buy their arms (like lighthouse of democracy Saudi Arabia) you good. They are "locked and loaded" to protect you.
China is giant now and its to late. You cant subdue 4000 years old civilization which was based on self discipline, comradeship. But it will collapse from it self, western consumerism plague will cut into the pores of China"s society as well. Climate changes, environmental pollution, viruses.... you name it.
I am not buying "If you not with us, you against us" bullshit. I will try to live easy life until armageddon, but one is sure. It will not be China, nor in the USA.
