Five Decades Of Nana

Thailand is Cambodia's neighbor to the West, and this forum is dedicated to Thai news, stories, reviews, blogs, videos, Thai people and anything else related to the country. A lot of expats have both lived and worked in Cambodia and Thailand, and this area is a place to discuss all aspects of life in Thailand and what's going on there. Most topics are about Bangkok and Pattaya because of their larger populations of expatriates and tourists in those cities, but this is for all things Thai.

none of them applies to me...I quite liked the fact that they wouldn't let in everybody.

the Atlanta also featured one of the best hotel restaurants ever with a huge menu book of traditional food choices, all described with a little story. ..one of the first swimming pools in BKK...and being at the end of the soi guaranteed a quiet place.
work is for people who cant find truffles

soi's are small numbered streets running off main streets. ie Sukumvit soi 4

The federal and mermaid were also 2 good hotels in the area.

A Road/Street is called Sai
An Alley/Sidestreet is called Soi

Sai 2 Soi 18 = the 18th alley street on 2nd Road

The Federal only closed maybe 6 years back IIRC.
It was a handy, clean and private place of the old R&R school.

Ahh, the Honey Hotel on soi 19..

I never stayed there but back in the late 80s and early 90s there was a little bar in the same street named 'PJ bar' aka Pat and Joe's bar. Ex US Vietnam vet and his thai wife. My regular haunt day time back then..food was great and Joe always had a story to tell.. My home away from home for many years..

He sold the place to another US guy from Phuket and it was renamed 'I see you bar' or such like.. I think it wasn't a success and closed down not long after.

A few years after that, I was in a coffee shop in Krabi and who do I see? None other than Joe.. He'd moved there with his wife and built a house there. Dunno what became of him since then.. must be getting on in years by now tho..

My favourite Soi Cowboy bar was a place called Shadow Bar...if I remember correctly...I think Toy Bar replaced it but in te early 90s it was, for me, the best bar on the soi...

What made Bangkok more fun back in the day than it has been in recent years?

Not a smart ass post, i'm just curious.

I first visited Bangkok in 2013 and found it pretty fun.
