To Mask or Not to Mask : Cambodian Expats, Do You Wear a Mask ?

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You wear a mask whilst running outside Image ImageImageImageImageImageImageImage lol...
Another useless uninformed opinion. Why do you think medical staff have worn masks for decades? :?
You are comparing medical masks with the cheap masks sold everywhere? N95 masks might help a bit. And again for a virus most people won't even notice they've got it Image

Up yr vitamine D and yr Zinc. Eat healthy and you have very little to worry about ImageImage
To me, my choice to wear a mask in public here in Cambodia is as much about not being seen as exuding western exceptionalism as it is about exuding anything else. May I also say that being compared to a sheep is rather offensive. Your "ignore it and it will go away" attitude is naive in the extreme.

Pray tell: why are the stats completely bogus? Because Dump said so?

I think the point can easily be missed here by what answers I am reading! Will wearing of a mask help protect you? Ever in your lifetime been in a conversation with someone and got spit on your face or mouth from the other person whom is talking? Have you picked up and taken a sip out of you can, or 50c glass of Angkor, then wiped your lips?
It's all about prevention, you could be the carrier of the virus just has your neighbours could be, wearing the mask will reduce the particles of sputum hitting the person you are in conversation with.

Anyone who doesn’t get that by now is deliberately choosing not to get it. Six months ago I’d be patiently trying to explain it on the theory that they just hadn’t understood the concept, but by now the only explanation for not wearing a mask in public is that you’re just an irredeemably selfish prick.

I don't think masks make much difference. They may help stop the spread of the virus but they certainly won't stop you getting it. With the number of PCR tests I have had in the past 3 months I am fairly sure I am negative, but I wear a mask when I go out because it helps the locals to feel comfortable around me, and also SR being a pretty dusty town I like to wear it on my motorbike. I can breathe fine, it costs me nothing , and yes I take it off in bars and cafes. Its simply a courtesy thing for the people in whose country I am a guest, and I think they appreciate it. If they dont, fuck em.

You two guys have valid points, has do all the rest of the post's, we will all have our own opinions on any subject, it seems that the medical bodies too may have a difference of opinion between each other, but bottom line is that the wearing mask helps in the situation whatever the views are.
I don't condone or condem anyone's personal opinion nor view on the subject, I only talk from unfortunately of past experience. I was a victim of an airborne virus, the medical people that treated me for that illness always wore a mask, I was lucky enough to come through such illness that took it's toll for five years. My sister wasn't that lucky, being that another strain of airborne virus took her life. Also, here I was contacted in the past by two people, members of this site or a similar one, both had fallen ill and their lives were taken short There is another member on this site too, who not long ago lost a family member.
I personally would take care and use any precautions that are available and going to the job to help/aid my wellbeing at this difficult time. Just now the only simple item on offer is that of a inexpensive facemask.
Take care everyone.

Like your comments, Andy. I think, like you, that wearing a mask might stop other people getting infected, and putting on a mask shows Cambodians that you are attentive to the local concerns about covid.
Mostly I go with the flow - see what everyone else is doing and do the same. If everyone is wearing a mask to go to the market, then wear a mask. And always carry a mask with you in case you need it. Oh, and I wash my hands when I get home.

In my circle, between foreigners, we don't wear masks when socialising, but do stay apart, and don't shake hands, kiss, share spliffs etc. :nono:

Yeah I probably didn't put that very well. What I meant was, if you got the virus then wearing a mask restricts the droplets and reduces the chances of passing it on. But if you dont have it, and you wear a mask, and you are in contact with someone who has it but they dont wear a mask, your mask wont stop the virus from infecting you. Clear now?
