Should the upcoming Covid Vaccine be Mandatory for International Travel?

Post by Username Taken »

In Australia, the annual Flu vaccine is optional. And, if you don't get it, no problem. Kids are not barred from attending school for not being vaccinated. It's business as usual for those that get it and those that don't.
Every year, some people die from the flu.

In Australia, regarding abortion, the official line is that "it's your body, it's your choice". A mandatory Covid vaccine would mean that it's my body, but it's only my choice when it suits the government.

Yet, if your children (in Australia) have not had all their mandatory childhood innoculations, you will be denied Family Tax Benefits. (Government blackmail. This law was introduced by Scott Morrison when he was Minister for Social Services. Now as PM he wants compulsory Covid vaccinations).

Is a vaccine being pushed onto the market too soon?
"The discovery and research phase is normally two-to-five years, according to the Wellcome Trust. In total, a vaccine can take more than 10 years to fully develop and costs up to $500 million." https://www.weforum.org/agenda/2020/06/ ... ronavirus/

Before making the vaccine mandatory, let's hope they don't forget the Thalidomide scandal. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thalidomide_scandal

And, finally, imagine that you are on an airplane. Everyone on that plane is vaccinated, except for you. Who is at risk? You or them? Does it really matter?

the US government can not force anyone to get a vaccine.

From another thread relevant to the US
Many immunisation experts worry that this “build it and they will come” approach is naive. At the moment, surveys suggest that anywhere between 20% and 60% of Americans may not accept a covid-19 vaccine. In one survey only a third of nurses said they would voluntarily get vaccinated. Some people are worried that the vaccines may not be safe, suspicious that corners may have been cut in the rush to develop them so quickly. Others have seen various kinds of alarming misinformation. Muddled messages from various political leaders have also done their share of harm.
IF you want travel thou the airlines can require a vaccine. so... its get a shot ( as Qantas already stated) or stay home
In a nation run by swine, all pigs are upward-mobile and the rest of us are fucked until we can put our acts together: not necessarily to win, but mainly to keep from losing completely. HST

So true, I'm in West Oz, I'm a health care worker, and one of the first to receive the vaccine, when it's available, in the next coming weeks or months. If we refuse vaccine, we can say goodbye to our jobs. So we have a small country town, with hospital 25 nurses, 15 hospitality workers,4 personnel care assistants and 10 old aged residents. So if 50% refuse, what happens then, close hospital? I'm not sure if I will have vaccine or not, it's to early to just say (yep it's OK just start with vaccine and we'll see what happens down the track),it's very scary at the moment. We still have air tickets to camdodia, but I think it's no jab no flying. So stuck between a rock and hard place, at the moment. 🏥🛫💉

That sounds like blackmail.

Exactly. You've got them by the short and curlys. Leverage.
Those 50% should get used to the possibility of losing their jobs, but go ahead and call their bluff. Who knows, they (the govt) might back down.

Hang on while I find that old song 'Together we stand, divided we fall'.

You should embed a second question; WILL the upcoming vaccine be mandatory?

My view is few governments will make it mandatory (Australia might be an exception). It is politically too damaging. They will rely on other countries making it mandatory for visitors, and they will then reciprocate with the same requirements. Voila... mandated via the back door.

I am taking a wait and see approach. This last year was a bust for travel, I don't expect 2021 to be any easier, so what is the point rushing to get a vaccine created so quickly in an atmosphere of mistrust and blame shifting?

Considering how often "the experts" change positions based more on geopolitics more than science, it is probably wisest to wait.

Fuck no.

I'm no anti-vax hysteric either. I am fully vaccinated, so are my children, but I am not taking an unproven vaccine. It can wait.

Also, it's not an effective long term thing anyhow, rather it's supposed to work like a flu shot, which is just for the old, weak or infirm, not all of the population.

It will come, in one way or another.

Another interesting aspect is travel insurance. If you refuse to get vaccinated and catch Covid while traveling, why should the insurance company shell out for the treatment? They, too, might add a stipulation to their terms.
