Swedish embassy in Phnom Penh will close 2021

Post by Joakim »

https://www.government.se/press-release ... -cambodia/

The Government decided today that the Embassy of Sweden in Phnom Penh will be closed by the end of 2021. Sweden has good relations with Cambodia. These will now continue in new ways.

The intention is to concurrently accredit the Ambassador in Bangkok to Cambodia, and the activities of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs (MFA) will be transferred to the Embassy in Bangkok. The MFA will no longer have any staff stationed in Cambodia when the Embassy has been closed. Development cooperation will continue to be carried out by Sida.

These changes are part of the MFA’s continuous adaptation of its organisation abroad to external changes and new monitoring and service requirements. This is a constant process of change, and involves Sweden sometimes opening or closing embassies and consulates.

No big deal as I see it.
Not much they can do there anyway.
If U want new passport U have to go to Bangkok because they can only make ”emergencypassports”.
If U want visa for Sweden U have to go through the French embassy.

Maybe just better to close it and save the money.

That's very sad, whatever happened to the Sweden-Kampuchea Friendship Association?
The first Westerners to visit Cambodia after the isolation of April 1975, was the Swedish ambassador in China, Kaj Björk, and Jan Lundvik from the State Department. The year was 1976, about a year after the takeover of power in Cambodia. Upon his return to Sweden Lundvik testified about the successful revolution and announced that they did not believe the data that it committed genocide in Cambodia.

Sweden grants Covid-19 relief funds to Cambodia
by Zazithorn Ruengchinda • October 26, 2020 •

On 20 October 2020 the Embassy of Sweden announced a COVID-19 response package to financially support rural communities in Cambodia through tree planting activities. The initiative aims to engage over 1,600 rural households in Pursat and Siem Reap provinces to plant local trees, establish nurseries, and participate in other conservation activities across the country.

This initiative will be led by the Ministry of Environment with technical support from the UN Development Programme (UNDP) under the Building an Enabling Environment for Sustainable Development (BESD) project.

The already high pressure on forests and biodiversity is on the rise due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Across Cambodia, tens of thousands of people have lost their jobs and over 100,000 migrant Cambodians have returned from neighboring countries to their hometowns in rural areas. For some, the search for money and food is becoming desperate. As a coping livelihood strategy during the crisis, an increasing number of people enter the forests to cut trees, hunt animals, and fish, causing additional pressure on already fragile ecosystems.

I stand corrected.
10th now according to this report via radio Sweden
down from 6th.
I must admit my previous quoted information is about 10+ years old - so it may have been closer to 2nd/3rd then.

The joke still stands i reckon. Sweden was at peak Nice Guy in those days, not long ago.
Still in the top ten - for both.

"Sweden still in top 10 of weapons exporters
The report reveals that over the last five years, Sweden has been the world's 10th largest exporter of major conventional weapons, down from 6th place. The reason is not that Swedish exports have decreased, but that the global arms trade has risen."

Below is a link to a PDF of the book “Kampuchea” by some Americans who were part of a Maoist group in The U.S. They worked for an anti-war newsletter in Chicago called “The Call.” They visited Cambodia in 1978, said Ieng Sary was “friendly and down to earth,” saw nothing bad at all, and reported that all negative press about the Socialist regime was lies and Capitalist propaganda.

One of the authors now writes books on entrepreneurship and the other is a venture capitalist.

I found one author online and emailed him and stated that I found a copy of the book and wondered if he had any comments. He said in University at that time in America you couldn’t find a girlfriend if you weren’t an anarchist or communist. He said they were lied to the entire time during their trip in Cambodia. He was very regretful for his support of the Khmer Rouge.
