English ability: Cambodia improves, Viet Nam, Thailand continue slump

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

English ability: Cambodia improves, Viet Nam, Thailand continue slump

Post by ExPenhMan »

Since this cuts across SEA, I put this in General Chatter.

Swiss-based Education First issued its 2020 English proficiency rankings among non-native English speaking countries this week.

SEA nations' low rankings include Viet Nam (65th), Cambodia (84th), Thailand (89th) and Myanmar (93rd) out of 100 nations tested.

Of course, Singapore still ranks first in Asia, with Philippines and Malyasia ranking second and third.

VN has been really slipping every year since 2015, from 29th to the current 65th. (On the ground, I don't find it so bad, certainly better than Thailand.)

Cambodia has improved 10 places since last year. Good stuff.

Thailand has plunged steeply, from 53rd to 89th since 2016. No surprise.

Vietnam is 65th on that list.

So far the Vietnamese have never failed to amaze me with their English skills. That Cambodia is only 5 ranks above Thailand surprises me, it certainly feels different when traveling there. Thailand remains and has always been a disaster. On the bright side, that motivated me to learn Thai.

Only in the cities. Get out and English is very, very limited. And I agree, I always have wondered about how little English is spoken in Thailand.
