Why sell to them. Do you not think Canada, USA. Germany, Russia or even Australia have the skills needed to build a steel mill .Phnom Poon wrote: ↑Fri Nov 27, 2020 4:38 pmexactlySternAAlbifrons wrote: ↑Fri Nov 27, 2020 11:43 am But if you do have anything they reeeally need, like cheap shiploads of the world's purest iron ore, eg
- maybe start thinking about how you can grab their balls and start twisting.
sell them the coal on condition they build mills in oz to use it

Re: 'We will be the enemy': China issues stunning threat to Australia
western nations will be moving to electric steel production
in the meantime we should play china's own game
move it's industrial capacity from under it
and then bring it under international environmental and competition standards

Chinese artist behind fake Aussie soldier image hits out at PM

The Chinese artist behind the fake image depicting an Australian soldier slitting the throat of an Afghan child has warned he’ll create another image following Prime Minister Scott Morrison’s calls for an apology.
Wuheqilin, a renowned ‘wolf warrior’ style artist with more than 600,000 followers on Twitter-like site Weibo, has responded to the uproar in the wake of his picture being shared by China’s foreign ministry spokesperson Zho Lijian on Monday.
At the end of his video he criticised the prime minister for targeting him and said there could be further illustrations to come.
“If I’m not too tired tonight maybe I’ll make another drawing,” he said.
The term ‘wolf warrior’ used for Wuheqilin and similar artists derives from the Communist Party of China’s growing tendency to use ‘wolf warrior diplomacy’.
The tactic sees officials proactively condemning any criticism of China in an aggressive manner, often on social media.
The name ‘wolf warrior’ comes from two Chinese blockbuster action films of the same name, the first released in 2015 and features Rambo-like protagonists defending the interests of China across the globe.
Links to Beijing’s new approach to the film quickly followed, with Mr Zhao a renowned user of ‘wolf warrior diplomacy’...........................

Yeah, i reckon that is right on track, PPPhnom Poon wrote: ↑Fri Nov 27, 2020 9:02 pm western nations will be moving to electric steel production

It's not so much about challenging China - it's about building our own strength, and applying our own standards with those we do biz with.
There is no value in winging, crying "unfair" and locking in an inevitable war.
It is our responsibility to make sure we don't become "victims".

Like the WTO? PRC China still claims third world status, similar to Cambodia, and is thus exempt from international standards.Phnom Poon wrote:western nations will be moving to electric steel production

Plus, Chinese thinking is always to use laws against your enemies. Because your enemies are stupid enough to follow them.
And the PRC has just passed a new law restricting export of anything against national interest. Exactly what that is will never be spelled out, of course.
Meanwhile the country has cornered the rare earth market, as well as other key commodities. Like precursors to medicines.
It took decades to the world to become dependent on PRC China. It will take a long time (and political guts) for the world to be independent.

Ban the export of iron ore to china.

Great idea Andy ^^ but it is not going to happen.
You can't drop 90 billion/yr just like that. (Au biggest earner)
If the rest of the free world got back into biz, started making things themselves, and stop buying cheap crappy steel from China - then there would be more than one customer.
Personally, i reckon, advise all Au companies that it is foolish to rely on China for more than 50% of their biz (or similar number) - and if they did, not to expect any help from the Gov. ESPecially not "diplomatic" cowering to the extortion that will surely follow.
"Wear it yourselves BigBiz, if you want to play that profitable dangerous game the rest of the country ain't gonna fold to protect your extraordinary profits any longer"
Nothing wrong with trading with China. Dumb as flock for any country not to.
It is becoming vulnerable to blackmail and extortion that needs to be avoided.
But yes, maybe it is a good time for Au to start flexing it's muscles and restricting the export of this vital product to China.
Lower the dependence, and at the same time show they too have powerful trade weapons.
- and are prepared to use them.
(nb, just thinking out loud, i don't really know the realistic answers, just like everybody else
I just hope that Oz's recently rediscovered spine keeps on strengthening)

^^^
Another way to do it, especially if Au business is slow/unwilling to diversify their customer base is to put a tax/import duty on certain (or all) cheap chinese imports. Just like they did on our wine. Plenty of other emerging countries to buy from for that. Albeit China has given no choice/forced some companies eg wine, coal, barley, lobster, timber et al to seek other customers anyway through their own actions.
But I agree if we halt all iron ore trade it would be a major catastrophe for Au...might as well stop all trade between the countries.

You've got a lot of friends in the world, with deep collective pockets, who could use Australia's battle with China as a proxy, a chance to send a clear message to Beijing: Pick a fight with one, pick a fight with all.
Buying Australian Wine is a good start. Dropping or drastically lowering tariff's on Australian products could be the next move.
In vino veritas! Let’s stand up to China’s bullying by buying Australian wine

If Australia buckles under Chinese pressure, it will send a terrible message
All Western countries must form a united front against China's aggression
If you want to do your bit for Western values, it's time to crack open a bottle
When your closest friends are being bullied for standing up for the values you share with them, it is right to do everything possible to stand up for them. And when they are paying a price for defending the truth, it is right to stand with them.
Australia is the canary in the coalmine for the free world. In recent months it has provoked the furious wrath of the Chinese Communist Party regime simply because the Australian government demanded an international inquiry into the causes of the pandemic. In and of itself, Beijing’s fury indicates Xi Jinping’s regime has something to hide.
Since then Australia has spoken against the destruction of Hong Kong’s freedoms, extending a lifeline to Hongkongers who wish to leave the city, suspending its extradition treaty with Hong Kong and signing on to several joint statements with Britain’s Foreign Secretary and other governments in the Five Eyes security alliance.

Democracies are always divided and bickering with each other. That’s why countries like China (aka the PRC) can always pick them apart, often from within.
Already there’s talk that that next year, US tariffs with China will be scrubbed. Possibly also strong arming Australia to obey the PRC masters as well.
I sincerely hope I’m wrong. But historically, Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan were stopped when the democracies were forced to go to war with them.
