Exchanging bad $50USD or $100USD - HELP!

Post by nickin910 »

I brought cash with me from the US. Many of my $100USD bills are the older bills and either have a stain or a slight tear that no one will take and banks won't exchange.

Does anyone know of a bank that may allow me to exchange these bills out?

Any bank in the USA will do I guess.

Here some money changers around the Central Market will (ex)change your bills at about 80% of their value.

Do you have a bank account here? I've found that the cash deposit machines are normally quite forgiving of small imperfections

Do you have a bank account with ABA? If not find someone you trust who does, and go to one of the ATM machines that you can deposit money into an ABA account and see if they're accepted in those, there's an ABA branch right outside in front of AEON with a deposit machine in front which accepted my ex-GF's really old $50.

That's after we'd gone to every bank in AEON to see if there was anything we could do with it.

Funny you mention this, yesterday we went to a couple of the AEON banks, ABA being one of them. I have a friend who has ABA - I'll have to check with him to see. I also thought about opening an ABA account. I've yet to open a bank account in Cambodia yet.

Thanks for your reply!

Do you know if they will take the older version of the bills though?

ABA has a rule that if you deposit notes in their machines that are unacceptable, you will have to pay a 50% commission for them being refused.

I am not sure what will trigger that, certainly any fakes, but I think damaged notes will qualify. I never paid too much attention as I only ever deposited new crispy $100's so didn't care.

When you deposit there is a warning on the machine, or it comes up on the screen, I can't remember which. So, check this out before you try to stick a load of old ones into them.

I believe you can take them to the National Bank of Cambodia. But I wouldn't tell them you brought them from the US. Just tell them you got them here somehow- the unassuming foreigner.
