3,500 guesthouses close in Siem Reap... what’s the figure for PP?

Post by jah steu »

This is a shocking statistic if true. The impact of corona restrictions really has been devastating to the tourist industry here...

No way there has ever been 4000 Siem Reap properties listed on booking.com. I mean even the really big tourist cities around the world hardly have that many hotels/guesthouses :D

Booking.com now lists a lot of private apartment and AirBnB type places.

Could it have been 4,000 rooms?

1 hotel with 10 rooms vacant would be 4,000 in total (approx)

booking.com does not list a hotel with 200 rooms as 200 hotels LOL

Lindsay Westphal is a lawyer. So be careful of what you say.
(lol, I just deleted my previous comments)
He has already been in at least one small s*** fight with TOF and the Cambodia Daily about 4 years ago
- which also happened to be about the accuracy of what he was reported as saying.

As a former police prosecutor (Aust, NT) he can be relied upon to never exaggerate a situation - to make it look worse than it really was. No way!

Besides he is a hard core Acca Dacca fan - so be very careful...

Tip advisor currently lists 1558 places to stay (hotel, guesthouse etc)

Google has 1308 hotels & 793 holiday lettings (maybe some crossover)

Wouldnt surprise me if there were well over 3000 at its peak.

Yes, Temple Town is getting hammered, but Covid is only accelerating a trend that started years ago: an oversupply of rooms and restaurants, a drop in affluent tourists, land prices and rents that are totally ludicrous (5 grand rent for a 10-room guesthouse?), etc.

* Picture from guys facebook
I would take anything that guy says with a grain of salt. When the inter-provincial travel restrictions went into effect for KNY he was claiming all over FB that there was a country-wide lock-down in order to try and drum up business for his failing Guesthouse. When posters explained to him there was no actual lock-down, he then started trying to claim that this so-called lockdown would be like the Military coups that he and/or his friends witnessed in Cambodia in 2002-3, 2006-7 & 2013...when it was pointed out there have been no military coups in Cambodia since the attempt in '97 he then went on to claim that he witnessed a battle in 2006 (quote) "In 2006, I witnessed a general lead some 400 dedicated soldiers up the road from the airport. They were met with fierce resistance at the bridge by HE with his 3000 plus to repel them. HE won, of course. The opposing general was executed", again when pointed out he was full of shit he then started with the good ol' Walter Mitty expat claims about having high level KH Govt and Military connections, and then he started threatening posters who questioned his claims with threats of arrest, deportation, execution, etc. The bloke has got a screw, or several, loose. When asked to provide evidence of his claims he claimed to be a military historian and charges $450 for his research, so posters would have to pay him to see the evidence, he then went on to block every poster who questioned him and deleted his posts.
