Rice: white or brown?

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

Rice: white or brown?

Post by IraHayes »

Just bought and tried some brown rice and i must say i can't believe I've been eating white rice all these years.

Not told my wife yet so we'll see what she says when she gets back from HCM and finds the rice bin full of the new rice lol.

Does it take longer to cook or any additional preparations? And old friend from years back said he had to soak his for 24 hours, which put me off immediately.

What's the difference between white and brown rice anyway?

Red!

Tastier and healthier, certainly than white rice.

No you don't have to soak it, just cook it a bit longer.
Brown rice has not been milled so it still has its outside coating (insert technical term).
If you talk about brown rice to a Khmer, she will make pounding gestures. That's because a farmer can make the rice ready for eating without sending it to a mill.
It's healthier than white but still has a high glycemic load. Basmati rice is healthier.

If your wife is Asian, good luck with the brown rice attempt. Tried that with my mother a few years back and after one try, she rejected brown rice fully, telling me essentially that the unprocessed brown stuff is peasant food.

As above;
Love Brown rice BUT as my other half does the Asian cooking, we eat white rice :-)

She’s right. It is peasant food. Throughout history skinny was a sign of low class. Fat was a sign of high class. It’s only in the last century or so that this has reversed.

My parents eat the 15 different varieties rice. It’s monk food from the temple. I personally don’t like it. But I predict when missus arrives, I will be forced to like it, eventually.

Maybe they don't eat brown rice because they don't want to be poisoned by arsenic. Brown rice is very toxic enjoy your meal.
