How much is it costing you to live? (Again)
Re: How much is it costing you to live? (Again)
Rent $400, Food, shampoo, shaving cream, soap etc $500 for a big family, $80 Elec, $5 Water, Internet $16, Smart Top ups $10, Entertainment $200, Baby items $150. I try to save around $600-$800 a month from my income, anything left over goes towards big expenses like purchase of furniture or holidays.
Life here is what you make of it, some people get by on pennies whereas others need their creature comforts or like to go out and enjoy themselves. Each to their own.

Not all expats are here to live on the cheap. I don’t necessary want to be in PP but my clients demand me to be here and I have responsibilities towards my staff here as well. I probably could live on 3,000 a month but why the F would I want to?
That question you are asking shows the problem with this thread: While I am sure that most expats on this forum came here because it’s a good place to live on the cheap, I would still argue that the majority of expats in Asia came for careers and to make good money.
I’m not technically an expat because I was born and raised in Asia but being Caucasian perhaps puts me in some sort of corner. And I know plenty of people come need to “temporarily” call themselves “expats” in Cambodia because of current shifts in economic circumstances. They may come from Singapore or Shanghai or HK, are on corresponding packages and come here for a few months.
My current neighbour (coincidentally an old mate from Uni), born in UK, in Singapore for about 15 years, was asked by his company to move to PP for a year because Covid made his frequent travels here impossible. He works as a forensic accountant for an insolvency lawyer firm and is working on two massive cases involving mainland companies here, in which deals went pear-shaped. The guy is on a 12,000 SGD housing allowance! Imagine his actual salary.
According to you question this guy, and many others in similar circumstances wouldn’t have a reason to be here.

The second one is a much more practical question , i also like to know why people from foriegn countries come here to watch sports , preach religion or try to ‘ clean up ‘ the place or gripe about junk they don’t like .timmydownawell wrote: ↑Sun Nov 01, 2020 1:42 pmIt's better than this question:theKid wrote: ↑Sun Nov 01, 2020 12:19 pmThat question you are asking shows the problem with this thread: While I am sure that most expats on this forum came here because it’s a good place to live on the cheap, I would still argue that the majority of expats in Asia came for careers and to make good money.

Practical? It implies Cambodia is only good if you're into drink, drugs and hookers. I'm sure the locals would be thrilled. There is so much more to this country than that.pissontheroof wrote: ↑Sun Nov 01, 2020 3:17 pmThe second one is a much more practical question , i also like to know why people from foriegn countries come here to watch sports , preach religion or try to ‘ clean up ‘ the place or gripe about junk they don’t like .timmydownawell wrote: ↑Sun Nov 01, 2020 1:42 pmIt's better than this question:theKid wrote: ↑Sun Nov 01, 2020 12:19 pmThat question you are asking shows the problem with this thread: While I am sure that most expats on this forum came here because it’s a good place to live on the cheap, I would still argue that the majority of expats in Asia came for careers and to make good money.

I would say you’re in the minority on this topic .. i know what i came here after , and 3 things that definitely are not religion , sports , or rockin the boat for all the whores who try to get by without enuf decent jobs to go around to all the cashiers bank tellers and grocery store clerks i wish were available..

See, that’s where you’re wrong. There’s clearly nothing here but mongering, booze, drugs, and most importantly, shitting on those who aren’t here for that. I hope this clears things up.timmydownawell wrote: ↑Sun Nov 01, 2020 5:28 pmPractical? It implies Cambodia is only good if you're into drink, drugs and hookers. I'm sure the locals would be thrilled. I think it’s a fair (although incorrect) perception.timmydownawell wrote:Practical? It implies Cambodia is only good if you're into drink, drugs and hookers. I'm sure the locals would be thrilled. There is so much more to this country than that.
Outside of Asia, Cambodia (excluding Angkor Wat) is pretty much unknown to the average person.
Thailand (Thai restaurants everywhere), and Singapore, Hong Kong, people have heard of.
Telling the typical African or Scot (present company on CEO excluded) that one is living and working in Battambang as a computer networking specialist will elicit questions of ‘Where is that?’
Plus the average Khmer from Battambang aren’t globe trotters and wouldn’t care much about how the world thinks.
It’s unfortunate. Maybe someday, that will change. Or Cambodia will be just become a mega Chinese city. And all the Khmer will carry PRC passports.
Sorry for detouring this thread.
