Cambodian Women Warned About Marrying Foreigners
October 22, 2020
Ministry issues warning on overseas marriages
A senior official at the Ministry of Interior has called on young Cambodian women to be cautious regarding overseas marriages, which can end up turning sour.
“I would like young women to think carefully when seeking a marriage partner overseas, where they expect to have a good marriage. When you marry far from our home country, we cannot see what will happen. There have been bad cases of overseas marriages in the past,” said the Ministry of Interior secretary of state and National Committee for Anti-Human Trafficking vicechairwoman Chou Bun Eng.
The comments were made yesterday after a seminar on support services to survivors of human trafficking.
“Don’t be greedy for money and benefits that can be gained from overseas marriages. We should prevent ourselves from being cheated,” she added.
Bun Eng called on young women not to take the risk of overseas marriages, urging them to learn to live inside the country like other Cambodians.
“Millions of Cambodians live in the Kingdom so why can’t young women? We have not banned overseas marriage, but if the situation seems unsafe, women should be wary of being deceived,” she said.
Bun Eng said they could lose time, honour, dignity or property, and if they are not rescued on time they will have issues for life.
“I hope that young women who are being lured overseas for marriage will reconsider,” she said.
A young Cambodian woman, Sem Sreypich, who claimed to be a victim of an abusive marriage in China, is set to arrive in the Kingdom today after the Cambodian Consulate in Shanghai helped her return home after she appealed to Prime Minister HE on social media.
Gender and Development for Cambodia (GADC) executive director Ros Sopheap told Khmer Times yesterday that foreigners who wish to marry Cambodian women should undergo a thorough background check and the women should be provided with all of the information found.
She said a law should be established to set conditions for foreigners who take women to foreign countries after marriage. “The law must ensure the women are marriage partners, not victims.”

Good idea and may also protect the man from the greedy woman who after a couple of years takes half his fortune.
I would suspect more men have fallen foul but financially not physically from these marriages , but yes the women also need to get education it's not all love and rose's

I'm surprised they don't already know that marrying a Khmer guy is the equivalent to a walk in the park, financial and social utopia!
I'd hazard a guess that marrying a Khmer guy is a helluva lot more dangerous and fruitless than marrying a foreigner, which might be a reason Khmer women are jumping at offers (if they are, I wouldn't have any idea, just interpreting from the story).

Re: Cambodian Women Warned About Marrying Foreigners
Foreigners do not just include white guys. A lot of Khmer, Vietnamese, whatever women married Taiwanese or Koreans on what is basically a modern day slave market, expecting a better life. They ended up marrying some peasant, doing the same shit they did back home but in a country with no friends, a foreign language, and no social network.

The real question is, why should anyone marry at all?

Re: Cambodian Women Warned About Marrying Foreigners
There are plenty of good Khmer men around too, but even they tend to have very traditional attitudes. A quick look in the news does show that some are fucking terrible though. There are some gruesome drunken batterings, shootings and murders going on every day.
Silence, exile, and cunning.

“Millions of Cambodians live in the Kingdom so why can’t young women?"
Says Mrs. Bun Eng, from what I'm sure is an obscenely palatial ministry office, probably driven there from an enormous borey estate in a $100,000 plus luxury SUV by a black safari suited thug with a pistol in his waistband. Need I mention the jewelry and diamond encrusted rings large enough to choke a small horse.
Naw, I'm sure she lives a humble life on a meager civil servants wage.
This is the ultimate in "Let them eat cake."
She should be asking the real question, which is why do so many Khmer women seek marriage to foreigners.......what is the systemic rot in the social fabric of Cambodia that leads to this phenomena.
Naw, that would be thinking too much.

Re: Cambodian Women Warned About Marrying Foreigners
Misleading title, the article isnt about it marrying foreigners its about traveling abroad to get married.
Many recent issues in china, korea etc of khmer girls going after being promised a rich husband (whom they have never met) and get treated really badly and end up being rescued.
Don't get your knickers all twisty lads - the article wasnt about you.
