Analysis of MFIs and MDIs in Cambodia

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

Analysis of MFIs and MDIs in Cambodia

Post by rubberbaron »

That sector has become a favorite target of some NGOs claiming that predatory lending combined with loss of income and possibly farm land drives a lot of Cambodians into poverty. Some people on this board and elsewhere even paint a doomsday picture not only for this sector but banks in Cambodia in general when the real effect of the Corona crisis will hit next year. Going by more astute reports by the IMF, Asian Development Bank, etc., however, there is a silver lining on the horizon with growth forecast at about 2%.

For an in-depth analysis of that sector read this: https://www.phnompenhpost.com/special-r ... ce-sector

As for high interest rates I know of at least 2 banks that charge 24% p. a. on microloans: Union Commercial Plc and Aeon Specialized Bank Plc., so well over the 18% mandated for MFIs/MDIs.
