15 October 2020
Amongst so much grim news comes a cheering news story of solidarity and generosity, on Siem Reap Daily News page today:
FORGET CASH, PAY WITH TRASH FOR ENGLISH LESSONS
Photographer Sang Kimleng, determined to do something about Siem Reap’s mounting plastic waste problem, is running English classes for underprivileged students who instead of paying with cash, pay with trash
The students pay 1.5 kilograms of plastic waste each month for tuition.
Cambodianess reports that Sang Kimleng is a photographer, known for his work at Angkor Wat, but in the wake of the pandemic he has temporarily put down his camera and runs an innovative education program in Siem Reap City’s Teuk Vil commune
Kimleng has spent the last six-seven months teaching English, but intends return to photography when the torusist return.
“When the tourists come back, I’ll be back to work, but I may find someone else to take over the teaching,” he said, “We might find people to help teach or just hire teachers to teach the kids, as I will be busy every day.”
