Which is the bigger story? Hunter Biden emails or Twitter censorship?
Which is the bigger story? Hunter Biden emails or Twitter censorship?
By now most of you have probably heard about the story the NY Post ran yesterday on the recently released emails detailing the alleged meeting of Vice President Joe Biden with the representative of Burisma that was facilitated by his son, Hunter (who, of course, was on the board of Burisma and receiving a $50,000 per month salary despite having no experience in the energy industry). Of course, previously Joe had said on record that he had no knowledge of his son's affairs when he threatened to withhold a billion dollars in US aid from the Ukraine unless the Ukranian government fired the prosecutor investigating Burisma. These emails recovered from Hunter's laptop tell a different story.
The question I have though, is how many people would have heard about this had Twitter not intervened to censor this story and deactivate the NY Post's twitter account, as well as that of the Whitehouse Press Secratary Kayleigh McEnany? It seems to me, most international news picked up the story not because of the NY Post story about the emails, but because of the bigger controversy around Twitter censoring the story.
Just curious how many here would have been completely unaware of the scandal had Twitter not decided to call attention to it by trying to censor it?
Is this going to be the end of Twitter and Facebook? Is the US Congress now finally going to remove section 230 protection from Big Tech? It was the Libertarian contingent of the Republicans who were preventing this before. With this scandal, apparently taken against the Republican Party, are they finally going to change their position? And are the Democrats, previously calling for anti trust action against Big Tech, now going to flip and become their protectors?
Really interesting times we are living in...

Sooo sick of US/UK/EU politics. Really.
Re: Which is the bigger story? Hunter Biden emails or Twitter censorship?
Only a question of time until enough momentum will have built in both parties to regulate the tech industry. They get to play for a while, as others did before, but as it's getting completely out of hand, sooner or later it will be game over.

I heard about it, but I'm guilty for watching both CNN and Fox News, so you get stories on both sides. I watch them for entertainment purposes, really.monomial wrote: ↑Thu Oct 15, 2020 12:12 pm Just curious how many here would have been completely unaware of the scandal had Twitter not decided to call attention to it by trying to censor it?

And yes, I thin the 'Twitter/Facebook' side of the story is much bigger, but nothing new at all, it's just becoming more and more obvious what they are doing alost weekly. The most shocking part of it all is how many on the Left seem perfectly fine with these tech companies doing all this, because (at least for now) they are only censoring things they don't like themselves.
And no, I don't think this will be any final staw or anything for section 230. Senator Ted Cruz has been talking a good game about it all for the past year, but no action.
It does seem like it's very popular to let governments get involved in our everyday lives and decide what we can or can't say or do, as long as you agree with their stance on things. To me, that's insane. Even if you agree with them NOW, surely you recognize that giving them all this power to do what they want will not be very pleasant as soon as there are people in power who you don't agree with on things. Seems the best solution for everyone for lifetimes to come is get the governments out of our daily lives, and accept the fact that you might read or see something you wished you hadn't.
Section 230 is very important for these tech giants, but they have been totally taking the piss, so something will have to give, but probably later than sooner. I don't get how they can clearly target the Right and still keep that protection. Twitter was eager to promote the article about Trump's stolen tax returns, but are now saying they can't allow this story, which wasn't even 'hacked.'
Either way, what a shit show, but there really can't be anyone who thinks Joe Biden's son was making something like $50,000 a month to be on a board of a company he knew nothing about, and that Joe knew nothing about it. He's on tape saying he witheld a billion dollars from the US government until Ukraine fired the prosecutor investigating the company his son was on the board for. But at least he's not orange, so he has my vote.

Not sure anyone hates the Tech giants as much as the Left, Gen ^^^
They are the one pushing most for anti-trust, anti tax shifting, effective monitoring, and other stiff regulation.
No?
As for the current censorship - it is my impression that most of the fake news, anti science, covid- deniers, serious trouble stirring, trolling, etc is coming from the Right. So of course that stuff get censored more than stuff from the Left.
But i would not really know because the very last place on earth i would ever go for news is Facebook, Twitter, CNN, Fox et al.
News ^^ ?? Ha!!

so where does one go for the truth?
In a nation run by swine, all pigs are upward-mobile and the rest of us are fucked until we can put our acts together: not necessarily to win, but mainly to keep from losing completely. HST
