These days, I don't read that much but when I do, it's usually some outrageously ridiculous bullshit such as:

I may be going to hell in a bucket,
but at least I'm enjoying the ride.

Mostly science-fiction a.k.a spéculative fiction, the littérature of the possibles.
Especially the golden age, 1950 to 1980. No fantasy except Lovecraft and Jules Vernes maybe.

Reading the Martian Chronicles when i was a kid brought me to Indonesia somehow, gave me a better taste of it.
The Balinese and Apsara dances seems to come from another world, and living here was the closest thing to another planet.

Working through Descent into Hell...

Image

A frightening glimpse into the mentality the ordinary people under Imperial Japan during the Battle of Okinawa.

This battle convinced American military leaders that the bomb needed to be used. It was the right choice to save hundreds of millions of Japanese and half a million Americans. And it should never be used again.

Civilians blew themselves up with hand grenades at the end in mass suicide circles. Only when grenades didn’t go off did they surrender.

Furthermore, imperial military was full committed to using poison gas in the Battle for Japan. The home islands would have been a toxic cloud.

It didn’t matter how many died. They were all willing to die. As long as one more American could be killed.
