I believe these are the best Dance/Pop/Disco records ever.

There are a lot of runners up which I'll list without the links, but in my view these 12 are a level above the rest. Again, I won't try to rank them.

Tina Turner - Nutbush city limits (1973)

Chic – I want your love (1977)

Sister sledge - Lost in music (1979)

Leftfield - Open Up (1995)

Pulp - Common People (1995)

Paul Van Dyke/Paul Oakenfeld – For an Angel v Lover (1998)

Robyn - Dancing on my own (2010)

Bruno Mars - Locked out of Heaven (2012)

Finnebassen - If Your Girl Only Knew (2012)

David Guetta and Sia – Flames (2018)

Weeknd – Blinding Lights (2019)

I've always like Eleanor Rigby, but I never would have put it in a list of best DANCE/POP/DISCO.

If you're inclined toward DANCING/POPING/DISCOING then this version would be better suited.

Haha, what an awesome record. My ears didn't think they would ever hear that !

I split the records into 3 'categories' because it just seemed to make more sense to my imagined listener than going dance record, rock record, dance record etc, which would be a bit of a weird way to listen to music. That was my logic anyway. I shouldn't have bothered with the ballad category because for one thing probably half of them aren't even ballads, and for another I could have just chucked them into rock or pop quite easily in retrospect.

Funnily enough the 4 records I had the biggest problem with 'labelling' were the 4 Beatles records, which are Eleanor Rigby, Day in the Life, Here Comes the Sun (cover) and While My Guitar Gently Weeps. They produced such diverse and innovative music that it is hard to 'label' their stuff. I just felt that ER was more of a dance/pop beat than a rock record tbh.

I think Chain Reaction is a great track, but having listened to it so many times the BeeGeesy bit put me off it. The other great track I went off a bit and didn't include was Womak and Womak Footsteps on the Dancefloor. Plus all the Supremes tracks actually which as much as I loved, and as great as they were for their day, when I was honest about it I felt they couldn't really be held up against modern dance records with all the fancy production on them. It was the same in the rock records for Little Richard really. MILES ahead for his time, but they just don't stand up against records produced 20,50 years later imo.

What a contribution the Supremes made though, and Dianna Ross in particular. She was such an amazing and natural performer. Check her out here. The facial expressions, the jealousy in the voice. It's just wonderful wonderful performing.

I read a little about her life the other day actually. She obviously broke a lot of hearts and was an incredible woman as well as musical talent.

For me the Supremes were the early mid 60s US version of the Beatles. Obviously they didn't go on to develop their music in the same way, but from what I can see they were the real US 'equivalent' of the band as it was at that time not the beach boys who I think are hugely over rated.

that is actually a fair point. i didn't really consider their stuff (other than their shoddy contribution to chain reaction).

you might be on to something there. i'll check it out.

And here's the rock version of Eleanor Rigby. :thumb:

You may, or may not, recognize Rick Springfield on guitar.

interesting, but i wouldn't describe it as the rock version of ER. To me it's someone playing guitar for a rock track (trying to be jimmi hendrix), with a vocalist singing the ER lyrics. It just doesn't work I don't think. Tbh I think that one's dreadful. The original clearly isn't a rock track. I don't know what the fuck those guys are playing at.

Back on Diana Ross. She was evidently best friends with Cher. Cher suggested to her then husband that he goes shopping with Ross to get some ideas for what he can buy her (Cher) for Christmas. So they go shopping. He falls in love with Ross. Bye bye Cher (who I believe was almost kate bush hot back in the day).
