Cops on every corner at 7am!?!

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

Cops on every corner at 7am!?!

Post by HappyChappy »

So I'm in a tuktuk in PP around the 6AM-7AM Mark. EVERY corner had army style cops with rifles and several other street level cops. Is this normal?? Wtf is going on, very strange to see.

Nothing unusual, they deploy at strategic locations on along the route of travel whenever HE and his motorcade are travelling, or high level diplomats.

On a related note.
While we were riding around this morning going to opticians I noticed a lot more police on street junctions than usual. Not the armed guys for the high level gov. convoys but the regular police.

Yeah it's a bit weird they got all their new traffic lights complete with cameras courtesy of the Chinese, but can't turn them all red at once for the motorcades. Or perhaps they can but don't trust most people to actually stop. OK never mind.

The "army style cops" are usually Bodyguard HQ or Gendarmerie which are army units, although Gendarmerie have a role in civilian policing. There are sometimes Justice/Intervention Police too, they wear bottle green outfits with a bright green scales of justice badge.

Did pedestrian crossings at the riverside make traffic stop when people wanted to cross the road ? :)

Half the population probably things red light means Go anyway :)

Because when the motorcade come they will stop traffic from connecting roads. Then you got police in all intersections and it can be either traffic police, normal police, military or bhq.

Need at least 2 per intersection. That would be alot of fully armed BHQ guys just to stop some motorbikes from going through.

What's the HQ stand for?
