Rumour Cambodia will get rid of 1 and 5 dollar notes?
Rumour Cambodia will get rid of 1 and 5 dollar notes?
There is a rumour that Cambodia will replace the 1 and 5 dollar notes with Real notes in your change and even get rid of them altogether. Aeon and Lucky Supermarket are already doing it.
I wonder if they worry that the virus may be carried on these dirty low denomination notes.
What are your thoughts?

They are going to ban all US notes smaller than $500 and all Riel lower than 500,000. In the transition period you will be allowed to barter gold jewelry, canned fish and other goods.
Silence, exile, and cunning.
Re: Rumour Cambodia will get rid of 1 and 5 dollar notes?
This a very old story that is due to the cost of shipping pallets of ones and fives back to the US.
The Khmer markets have stopped taking them for months. It was only a matter of time before it became more widespread.
Who cares?
I like using Riel for smaller purchases and prefer it as my change in order to pay tuk tuk drivers.
Of course, my Barang market, still likes to unload fives and ones on me if I let them.
I read there was a 15,000 Riel note out, but, I have not seen one yet.
I love the system here.
I have been in many countries where carrying 100,000 notes worth virtually nothing forced me to have huge wads of cash.
I have been in a country where dollars were illegal because the government needed them to pay their debts. The blue dollar market thrived and I had locals begging me to sell them dollars at the blue market rate. Even friends gladly paid the going rate.
I have been in countries where the banks gave you the government rate and the black market gave you 3 times that rate.
So, this is certainly no big deal and the reason was long ago explained by the banks.
Making flippant jokes seems kind of childish.

^^Agreed on flippant jokes. In fact, I think even non-flippant jokes are childish and should be banned. If people are looking for humour they can go listen to Bob Hope or something.

No need to be a smartmouth, JB. Not everyone is as informed and all knowing as you are.John Bingham wrote: ↑Wed Sep 16, 2020 2:44 am They are going to ban all US notes smaller than $500 and all Riel lower than 500,000. Oh my what a sensitive bunch.
Looking at the OP he is not a prolific poster or reader of the forum given his posting stats and the fact he missed the whole thread about the $1 & $5 bills.
But thats cool, now let's take a look at the first 2 replies.....
He's asked a question and CEO news were quick to point him in the right direction. JB then comes along and makes a witty comment that is so absurd in its content that you would have to be pretty dumb to realise it was actually meant to be taken at face value.
It is obviously a joke.
But, apparently, we can't allow jokes.
Why? A bit of friendly banter is a way to break the ice and encourages a reply.
For example... a reply that shows you got the joke and are attempting to throw it back/keep it going could be something like ....

oh no!
wait... do "goods" include beer and weed?
Re: Rumour Cambodia will get rid of 1 and 5 dollar notes?
I have been noticing this a lot recently, lots of 5k and 20k riel notes appearing where 1's and 5's were the norm. Got to be on the ball when checking your change. Thank god for ABA's QR code pay, the more places that go cashless the better.
Does anybody know the cut-off date or if there will be a transition period during which you can pay them into a bank? Or will it just happen overnight and we'll be left with a fistful of them?

Re: Rumour Cambodia will get rid of 1 and 5 dollar notes?
does anyone really care?
a $1, $5 is still $1, $5
not like they are going to be unusable
fuck just carry 5,000 & 20,000 riel notes
and give 1,000 riel tips instead of $1

In a nation run by swine, all pigs are upward-mobile and the rest of us are fucked until we can put our acts together: not necessarily to win, but mainly to keep from losing completely. HST
