There is a rumour that Cambodia will replace the 1 and 5 dollar notes with Real notes in your change and even get rid of them altogether. Aeon and Lucky Supermarket are already doing it.
I wonder if they worry that the virus may be carried on these dirty low denomination notes.
What are your thoughts?

This a very old story that is due to the cost of shipping pallets of ones and fives back to the US.
The Khmer markets have stopped taking them for months. It was only a matter of time before it became more widespread.
Who cares?
I like using Riel for smaller purchases and prefer it as my change in order to pay tuk tuk drivers.
Of course, my Barang market, still likes to unload fives and ones on me if I let them.
I read there was a 15,000 Riel note out, but, I have not seen one yet.
I love the system here.
I have been in many countries where carrying 100,000 notes worth virtually nothing forced me to have huge wads of cash.
I have been in a country where dollars were illegal because the government needed them to pay their debts. The blue dollar market thrived and I had locals begging me to sell them dollars at the blue market rate. Even friends gladly paid the going rate.
I have been in countries where the banks gave you the government rate and the black market gave you 3 times that rate.
So, this is certainly no big deal and the reason was long ago explained by the banks.

^^Agreed on flippant jokes. In fact, I think even non-flippant jokes are childish and should be banned. If people are looking for humour they can go listen to Bob Hope or something.

Couldn't agree more. Nobody needs that crap, and the OP didn't deserve it. People are taking notice!

I have been noticing this a lot recently, lots of 5k and 20k riel notes appearing where 1's and 5's were the norm. Got to be on the ball when checking your change. Thank god for ABA's QR code pay, the more places that go cashless the better.

Does anybody know the cut-off date or if there will be a transition period during which you can pay them into a bank? Or will it just happen overnight and we'll be left with a fistful of them?
