Never trust any device when it comes to data you can not afford to lose. Every storage device will break down - eventually, so don't trust your device, work with backups on a second (or even third) device for the data you can not allow to lose. For more security make an encrypted backup, Don't keep your backup with your original device, theft will still make you lose all. Or backup in the cloud if you don't care about the possibility of others browsing through your data.

Andy.

Apparently the surface rt runs on an arm processor and it's factory locked to prevent people from installing other operating systems.

There is a thread on xda on how to remove the lock.

Encrypt the data before putting it in the cloud Image

^ thanks for the answer so soon, how would I go about changing the current system and adding Linux, or better still is there a shop in Phnom Penh who could do it for me?
I was prepared for trading it in with Microsoft's offer of $200 on exchange for another product. I keyed the details into their site, they returned a message with a link to the UK site with the model of mine, showing the serial number was of England.£34 I was offered now on a exchange.
Always "hope" but never "expect".

Guess it depends on the series, all the Surfaces I considered in the past had Intel i3/ i5 / i7 chips.

I don't believe I've said you can't run Linux on a computer with an arm processor.

However, not all Linux distributions support it...

The surface rt is factory locked so you can't boot from USB and hence it's not possible to install another OS until you unlock this.. (which can apparently brick the surface)

Seems pretty simple to unlock it takes less than 5 minutes ---> https://surfacetip.com/disable-secure-boot-surface-go/

1.Shut down your Surface Go.

2.Press and hold the Volume Up button on your Surface, then press and release the Power button.

3.When you see the Surface logo screen appear, release the Volume Up button. The Surface UEFI screen will appear in a few seconds.Surface Go - Entering UEFI Settings

4.Go to the Security page, under Secure Boot section

5.On Change Secure Boot configuration dialog, change the option to Disabled.

6.Now go to the Exit page, and click Restart now to save the settings and restart your Surface.Disable Secure Boot on Surface

7.After rebooting, if you see a red bar with an unlock icon in the middle of the screen, it means the Secure Boot is successfully disabled.

Thumbs up for attempting to got the Linux route. I basically use Mint Linux most the time, nver had issues, but mostly just browse the internet. Good luck on the mouse issue. Let us know what happens.
