The victims were identified as Pon Nhong, 38 years old, and Phal Moun, 47 years old, lived in Bak Nem village, Somrong city Oddar Meanchey. They were a driver and guard who worked in military no. 402 at the Cambodian-Thai border.

The police said before the incident, the victims were at a farm of a man named Ros Chok. They saw some insects which they thought they could eat, so they roasted them and had a feast. A short while later, they became horribly sick, had seizures, and passed out.

Their families sent them to the hospital in Siem Reap, and they died on September 11, 2020.

Smart. Not identifying the insects so that others can steer clear of them. These articles are fun. Keep em coming.

Ok, I might be wrong, (so correct me), but I heard somewhere that any insects with bright colours are most likely to be poisonous, and mushrooms too. Do not eat. I mean - red and black - they just look poisonous.

Ok, I found a link:
Edible Insects: Identifying What We Can And Can’t Eat
Avoid Eating

Brightly colored insects: The bright colors are usually a sign and warning to the insect’s predators that they are toxic and harmful.
Hairy & Fuzzy Critters: The hairy and fuzzy insects can sometimes have hair that stings when it pokes you, as well as, stingers hidden within.
Potent Smell: Bugs that have a potent scent are best to avoid. Just as with the bright colored insects the stinky smelling creepy crawlers are putting off a toxic scent that can taste disgusting or even be harmful.

And don't forget, if you plan to eat insects, don't kill them by spraying with bug spray.

Chinese medicine. One woman died after swallowing an extract of some 200 + specimens, trying to induce an abortion.

A fatality due to the use of cantharides from Mylabris phalerata as an abortifacient

Abstract

A case of fatal poisoning due to voluntary ingestion of cantharides powder for aphrodisiac purposes is reported. Clinical history, autopsy and analytical findings are described. Blood and urine samples collected during the 30 h of survival, as well as the cantharides product, were analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. On the basis of the percentage of the active principle measured in the powder, an ingested dose of 26-45 mg of cantharidin could be estimated.

I suppose it’s just possible the two victims were extremely horny just before they passed away. What a way to go: a stiff salute and a body on fire.
