Prison inmate infected with Covid-19
PUBLISHED : 3 SEP 2020 AT 18:55
UPDATED: 4 SEP 2020 AT 12:33
A male inmate has tested positive for the coronavirus and has been moved from the prison to a hospital run by the Corrections Department.
Heath officials announced on Thursday evening that the infected man had until recently worked in Bangkok as a pub DJ and at First Cafe on Khao San Road.
People who had been close to him were being monitored, but no other infections had been detected to date. People who had no direct contact with the man were not in the "high risk" group.
Health officials were confident the situation was under control.
Taweesilp Visanuyothin, spokesman for the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration, said earlier on Thursday the prisoner's first test for the Covid-19 virus returned positive.
The inmate, a 37-year-old man, was imprisoned at the Central Special Correctional Institution on drug charges on Aug 26 with 34 other prisoners and officials, according to the Disease Control Department.
The first test conducted by Mahidol University on Wednesday found he was infected with the virus and he was immediately transferred to the hospital that night.
The tests on the 34 others returned negative.
The Disease Control Department collected a sample from the patient on Thursday for a second test, to be done by the Department of Medical Science, for confirmation.
The new case ends the run of 100 days when Thailand had no local infections.
Walairat Chaifoo, the director of the Epidemiology Bureau, said the man showed symptoms on Tuesday but it was not clear whether it was Covid-19 until the test on Thursday.
Before being imprisoned, he lived at Ban Suan Thon condominium in Bang Mod area of Thung Kru district with five other family members. All have been quarantined. "They are a risk group," she said.
Dr Walailak said the man worked as a DJ at the 3 Days 2 Nights pub and restaurant on Rama III and Rama V branches. A press statement issued by the Disease Control Department said he also worked at a coffee shop on Khao San Road.
Dr Walailak said pubgoers who had no direct contact with the patient were not in the high risk group.
Officials are monitoring the conditions of about 20 people who were at the court with him, including his lawyer.
Department of Disease Control director-general Suwannachai Wattanayingcharoenchai said the new local infection was not the start of the second wave, and he was confident the situation could be kept under control.
"If we keep the situation under control, there will be no new outbreak," he said.
Dr Suwannachai called for calm and urged people not to lower their guard against the disease.

Thailand tests nearly 600 people exposed to mystery coronavirus case

BANGKOK (REUTERS) - Thailand said on Wednesday (Sept 9) it had tested nearly 600 people potentially exposed to the country's first domestic coronavirus case in over three months, but has so far found no new infections.
The man, 37, had worked as a nightclub DJ at three different venues in the capital Bangkok in the two weeks before he tested positive on arrival in prison, following his recent conviction for a drugs-related offence.
Individuals deemed at risk across 12 venues including the court where he appeared, nightclubs and supermarkets were tracked down and 569 tests were administered, the Public Health Ministry said.
So far, all tests have come back negative and 32 individuals were awaiting results. Authorities have asked 400 other individuals considered low-risk to self-quarantine for 14 days.
How the man became infected remains a mystery, with all of Thailand's recent cases, typically less than a handful each day, detected in state quarantine among people returning from abroad.
Thailand has reported a total of 3,447 confirmed infections, 58 fatalities and has relaxed internal restrictions.
That toll is one of the region's lowest, with Indonesia and the Philippines the highest with more than 200,000 cases each.
Natural border crossings and check points with neighbouring countries like Myanmar and Laos have been tightened to prevent illegal entry, Thai Interior Ministry Permanent Secretary Chatchai Promlert said.
Myanmar last week sealed up its capital city after seeing cases more than double in just a few weeks.
The re-emergence of the virus in Thailand was another blow to its economy, delaying a plan from Oct 1 to start allowing the return of foreign tourists, initially on the island-resort of Phuket, with mandatory quarantine and limits on movement.
South-east Asia's second-largest economy suffered its biggest shrinkage in more than two decades in the second quarter as the coronavirus outbreak froze tourism and slowed consumption.

National
Oct 24. 2020
There were four new Covid-19 cases over a 24-hour period, including three cases in state quarantine and a domestic infection, the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration said on Saturday.
Of the three returnees, one patient, aged 38, had arrived from Austria and two, aged 26 and 38, had returned from Hong Kong. All the Thai nationals were female.
The domestic case was a 57-year-old French tourist, who visited Koh Samui in Surat Thani province with her husband and son.
Koh Samui Hospital showed a positive result on October 21, and the result was again confirmed by the Regional Medical Sciences Centre 11 in Surat Thani on October 22.
However, her husband and son have tested negative. Further information on the French tourist can be checked here.
As of Saturday, the number of confirmed cases in Thailand increased to 3,731 (783 in state quarantine), 143 are in hospital, 3,529 have recovered and been discharged and 59 have died.
According to Worldometer, as of 9am on Friday, the number of confirmed global cases had risen to 42.46 million, 31.42 million have recovered, 76,477 are in serious condition and 1.14 million have died.
Thailand ranks 146th for most cases in the world.
