Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

For immediate relief against jellyfish stings use vinegar.

Do Khmer people know this?

^^^ A common misconception Frank, i used to think the same myself.
DO NOT piss on it.

For tropical poisonous jellyfish -eg, Box and Irukandji (< we haven't started on these tiny evil creatures yet - the worst of the lot - and is in the Gulf)

- Call an ambulance and start the following first aid:
or; protect the injured area, get patient to a hospital quick AND perform the following first aid at the same time...

- Put plenty of vinegar on the jellyfish stings.
This stops any nematocytes that haven't already fired venom from firing.
If vinegar is not available, wash with sea water.
DO NOT use fresh water (or piss)

- Carefully remove the tentacles from the skin.
Pick them off - DO NOT wipe them off, that breaks more nematocysts (poison nodules) and rubs it into the skin.

- If the person is unconscious, perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)

Ah, OK. Must be one of those urban myths.
Only tried vinegar in the real world, but you can always garauntee someone will offer to shower you with a golden arc as you writhe in pain.

Came across this today. RIP.

Marine biologist Dr Lisa-ann Gershwin says the 17-year old’s death was preventable with better resources and education for remote communities

That looks painful, but he looks brave. Close shave. I really hope he get's back in the water someday again. Hope he has a few sessions with a counselor as it can grow into a full-blown water phobia.

Yea. Looks like box jellyfish marks. We have them all over the South China Sea. It's getting much more common in Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia.

Officials have put up signs to warn tourists of possible attacks by box jellyfish at the beaches on three popular islands in Surat Thani.
Thanyaporn Poolsawat, a fishery academic of the Middle Gulf of Thailand Marine and Coastal Resources Research and Development Centre, said the centre has frequently observed box jellyfish off the coasts of Koh Samui, Koh Pha-Ngan, and Koh Tao from July to October. She said officials have put up warning signs at all beaches on the three islands and provided bottles of vinegar next to the signs for tourists to use in the event they are stung by a box jellyfish. She said pouring vinegar over the sting for 30 seconds can prevent the venom from spreading further into the body. The centre has seen increasing numbers of jellyfish off the three islands during this period each year.
Thanyaporn said the box jellyfish found in Thai seas are as deadly as those in Australia but the box jellyfish in Thailand are larger in size so their tentacles are very long and have many cnidocytes or stinging cells, thus spreading more venom to victims.
Piss on the envenomated area immediately and do not scrub, find vinegar. Go to clinic fast.

I am not a doctor.
There are basically two reactions to jellyfish stings, 1) you are predisposed to negative histamine reactions(bee stings, nettles, sand flies, severe asthma, etc.) these can be life threatening even in those not immunocompromised.
2) organisms like box jellyfish, these can be ( are, rarely) deadly on their own. Blue ringed octopus fall in this category as well.
The Nematocysts ( this will be my screen name at some point) are actually a crystalline structure(edit: mostly calcium carbonate and therefore easily broken down) acids will break this down. The nematocysts are “dumb” and autonomic, they will keep injecting after the host is dead. That’s why it is important to deactivate them.
They are virtually naked to the human eye, though the tentacles carrying them are visible.
No matter the case, seeking competent medical help is always the best protocol.
Slightly edited for clarity re: chemical composition of nematocyst makeup
up to you...

DO NOT PISS ON A BOX JELLYFISH STING !!!
^^^ Dr Lisa Gershwin, a world-renowned expert on the jellyfish, is the director of the Australian Stinger Advisory Services at the CSIRO. - and a thousand other experts.

" organisms like box jellyfish, these can be ( are, rarely) deadly on their own"
2 or 3 species of Box jellyfish ARE the most deadly marine animals on the planet and kill a relative high proportion of those who are stung - NOT "rarely deadly". (although the creatures themselves are rare - and hence the number who are stung is low)
nor just those who are dispossessed
