Big Domestic Tourist Numbers for KNY Replacement Holiday

Post by CEOCambodiaNews »

August 18, 2020
Over 200,000 visit provinces on first day of holidays
The Tourism Ministry said today that more than 200,000 tourists visited provinces on Monday, the first day of the replacement Khmer New Year holiday.

In a statement, the ministry said it recorded a total of 230,000 visitors, most of whom had flocked to Kampot and Siem Reap provinces.

It noted that the public has a better understanding of COVID-19 prevention measures put in place by the Health Ministry and its own guidelines for those visiting tourism destinations.

The ministry said the influx of local and foreign visitors to tourist spots, especially in Siem Reap province, had provided job opportunities for tour guides.

It added that social distancing, however, had not been fully followed by large groups of visitors and some resorts had become overcrowded as a result of the influx of tourists.

The ministry said resort managers and officials at tourist sites were doing their best to implement social distancing measures, such as halving the usual number of people in tour groups to popular destinations.

The riverfront Phnom Penh was packed last night when I was there around 7:30-8:30pm
I'm standing up, so I must be straight.

Are they paying $350/ night for a nicer hotel in SR/ Kep? Are they willingly getting overcharged? Are they buying souvenirs? Is a family of 20 packed in one hotel room?

Even if the numbers are acceptable and the PR stunt may convince people that the tourism sector isn't in fact dying, what is going to happen on Sunday when people go back to PP? Back to new normal? Or another KNY in two weeks? In either case, the economy will suffer.

It's been very pleasant in PP with the streets so quiet. They can have another week off if they like.

i think everywhere,( they just held a Phuket 3 days bike week and lots of people in Patong)
People like to go where everyone else goes at the same time.

as soon as its NOT a vacation..
Back to dead.

How long can areas survive on domestic vacationers? Not long i'd say
Hotels, restaurants cant keep help on with 10% occupancy 80% of the time

It's hard to tell. For some likely indefinitely. Many smaller to medium-sized guesthouses own the land they're on, so by cutting staff numbers they can hold on for a very long time. Or temporarily shut and reopen.
