Can we still call Australia home? The refrain of expats facing shut borders and $20k flights

Yeah, that place out 'there'. Anything not really Cambodia related should go here.

Marise Payne:

The Australian Government will provide additional support to the most vulnerable Australian citizens whose return to Australia has been impacted by the restrictions arising from COVID-19.
The Australian Government Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade will provide this support through an expanded Hardship Program, which will build on our existing Traveller Emergency Loans.

That's nice of them, I'm getting more and more embarrassed to admit I've got an Aussie passport the longer this goes on.

The failure of the Australian Government to facilitate the repatriation of its citizens is another national disgrace. Chartering airplanes and setting up a quarantine facility is not that difficult for a national government. As in Thailand, privately owned hotels that desperately need business can also be recruited and used.

there by putting up the price.
returning aussies arent put first

they worry about swamping the quareenten amenities

No, the airlines have no choice in the matter because the Australian government has restricted the number of people who can enter the country. There are a limited number of quarantine hotel beds available, so they are limiting the number of entries to fit the number of quarantine facilities available.

Anyway, it seems that you are safe and sound in Australia so enjoy your privilege. ;)
