USA Embassy Lowers Travel Advisory to Cambodia - Level 3: Reconsider Travel

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

USA Embassy Lowers Travel Advisory to Cambodia - Level 3: Reconsider Travel

Post by Rtrac »

Cambodia had been designated with a Level 4 Travel Advisory: The Level 4 advisory instructs U.S. citizens not to travel abroad and requires that Americans who are overseas return to the U.S. or shelter in place. Per the government's updated statement: “The Department of State advises U.S. citizens to avoid all international travel due to the global impact of COVID-19.

As of August 7, 2020 the Travel Advisory level has dropped:

Travel Advisory: Cambodia - Level 3: Reconsider Travel

THE EMBASSY OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA IN PHNOM PENH IS TRANSMITTING THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION THROUGH THE AMERICAN LIAISON NETWORK AS A PUBLIC SERVICE TO U.S. CITIZENS IN CAMBODIA. PLEASE DISSEMINATE THIS MESSAGE TO ALL U.S. CITIZENS IN YOUR ORGANIZATION OR NEIGHBORHOOD.

August 7, 2020

Reconsider travel to Cambodia due to COVID-19. Some areas have increased risk. Read the entire Travel Advisory.

Read the Department of State’s COVID-19 page before you plan any international travel.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued a Level 3 Travel Health Notice for Cambodia due to COVID-19.

Cambodia has resumed most transportation options and business operations. Other improved conditions have been reported within Cambodia. Visit the Embassy's COVID-19 page for more information on COVID-19 in Cambodia.

Exercise increased caution in:
· Phnom Penh due to crime.
· Very remote areas of Battambang, Banteay Meanchey, Pursat, Siem Reap, Pailin, and Kampong Thom provinces due to land mines.

Read the country information page.

If you decide to travel to Cambodia:
See the U.S. Embassy's web page regarding COVID-19.
Visit the CDC’s webpage on Travel and COVID-19.
Enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive Alerts and make it easier to locate you in an emergency. Be sure to put an end date to your trip when you enroll.
Follow the Department of State on Facebook and Twitter.
Review the Crime and Safety Report for Cambodia.
U.S. citizens who travel abroad should always have a contingency plan for emergency situations. Review the Traveler’s Checklist.

Phnom Penh
Street crime, particularly phone and bag snatchings, occurs frequently in areas where foreigners gather; resistance can result in injury. We urge all travelers to be aware of their surroundings at all time and to be extra vigilant when displaying items like jewelry, bags and cell phones in public. Violent crime, such as sexual assault and homicide, is common, sometimes against foreigners.

Do not physically resist any robbery attempt. Use caution when walking or driving at night.

Battambang, Banteay Meanchey, Pursat, Siem Reap, Pailin, and Kampong Thom provinces
Land mines and unexploded ordnance are found in very remote areas throughout Cambodia, and especially in Battambang, Banteay Meanchey, Pursat, Siem Reap, Pailin, and Kampong Thom provinces.

Do not touch unknown metal objects; instead notify the Cambodia Mine Action Center at 012-800-473/023-995-437. Use a local guide when walking in forested areas or dry rice paddies in these areas.

Last Update: Reissued with updates to COVID-19 information.

When businesses drop the mandatory re-quarantine at home on arrival for 14 days from abroad and then virus retest afterwards will leisure travel back to Cambodia be viable.

17 month old thread

Cambodia has now, as shown on my other post, listed as "unknown" by the cdc
