Surely this can't be true? I've seen beggars in Bangkok. Are there no beggars in Vietnam or Timor Leste? There are actually very few beggars in Phnom Penh outside of the central tourist area, and there are far less of them than there used to be.

When I lived in Saigon in the late 90s there were organized gangs of beggars around District 1. Old women, amputees, kids, allsorts. Last time I was there was 2015 and they were pretty much gone, the place cleaned up quite a bit. The same year I spent a few months in Yangon, a few beggars outside the Mosques downtown but not many around the city. Maybe the begging business aint what it used to be.

why deny (those ladies, sort of ladies, whatever they are) the opportunity to serve their country? they're obviously too feminine to shoot guns and learn to do mens army stuff, but they look like they'd love to take care in the kitchen. what am I missing?
