Somebody should start a museum

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. Somebody should start a museum

Post by explorer »

In Cambodia there are still a lot of old things, which will disappear as the years go by. If somebody started a museum, they could collect old things from all over the place.

In one village I stopped at a small shop to get a drink. They have this old looking clock there. It is different from any clock I have ever seen before. I asked them how old it is. They said it is over 100 years old. This clock tells the time. I said it is amazing it still works. They said they took it to a clock repair shop, and had a modern clock mechanism fitted. The hands look old style. So they probably fitted the old hands to the new mechanism. It may not be extremely valuable, since they removed the old clock mechanism and replaced it with a modern one. But it is an old clock that could be displayed in a museum.

In another village I stopped to buy a drink in a shop under a house. I heard a clock chiming, like the old clocks did. The clock is up in the house, and I have not seen it. I asked the people how old it was. They said 50 to 60 years old. They told me the parts are original, and it still works. They said it is not for sale. Then they said, if somebody really wanted it, they would sell it for $5000.

If somebody started a museum, there are so many things they could find, which may not be around in years to come. A lot of things are no longer in use, and could be picked up quite cheaply.

Why don’t you start a clock museum?

Can I be in that museum ? I think I qualify .
Cambodia,,,, Don't fall in love with her.
Like the spoilt child she is, she will not be happy till she destroys herself from within and breaks your heart.

There's a Museum Cafe on Street124 where the owner has collected loads of old stuff. It's pretty hard to find anything old here.

On the other hand, things age pretty fast here.

Sure, the climate and termites don't help but I don't think many Cambodians really care much for antiques, they seem to prefer new shiny stuff.

There is also a museum in each or almost all provincial capitals.

Whether they open/have much to see is a different matter.

I used to have a document with a massive list of military and non military contributions\stuff that the Chinese gave democratic Kampuchea, it included submarines.
The bottom line is that the Viet's looted and outright stole everything of value (including whole factory's) from Cambodia in the late 70s early 80s.
Better men than the op have gone from province to province village to village looking for genuine antiques and found very little to nothing to show for it.

You would look for things which were typically Cambodian. There are a lot of old bicycles around. You would get a cyclo, an old cart, etc. etc.

For anyone collecting things, it would be a process of adding to it as you came across more things.
