Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

King Norodom Sihamoni on Saturday ordered the appointment of 39 new judges and 15 new prosecutors to carry out court duties nationwide as a group of veteran judges and prosecutors were assigned to new jobs.

The 29 judges will cover court duties at 20 provincial courts while the 15 prosecutors will be assigned to 14 provincial courts. The new employees have the right to receive basic pay and other allowances defined by law.

If they have removed a number of old judges and prosecutors from their posts, then the answer is probably "yes" since they need replacing. Why do you ask ?

Maybe this will ease the amount of accused who languish in pre-trial detention for exceedingly long periods of time waiting to see a judge?

Could Cambodia be taking a proactive approach to streamlining and making their Justice system more efficient in a concerted effort to better serve the public or are these appointments just lucrative kick-backs rewarding party loyalty?

I always found funny that in UK and USA they still wear wigs like we're still in the 18th century. It's a bit like asking a rock band to wear the same underwear model Elvis 's had.
And let's not talk about the bible swearing, that makes even less sense. Ridiculous, but yeah, still better than here for sure.

It is a thowback to anonymity. With the wigs and the gowns they all look the same. It is surprisingly effective actually, once they are derobed they look very different.

It was at the time, I found an explanation about this -

American judges stopped wearing wigs in the early 19th century, and this was partly to show that the US was republican and democratic. Judges stopped wearing wigs around the same time everyone else stopped wearing wigs to formal occasions.

The main reason is tradition. The British courts have been in business for hundreds of years, and maintaining tradition is to remind people of that.

Oddly enough, judges in the highest British court wear standard business suits and don’t even wear robes for hearings. The reason for this is that traditionally the highest court wasn’t technically a court, but a committee that heard appeals which they would “recommend” decisions to the monarch. That practice has carried on to the Supreme Court of the UK.
Always "hope" but never "expect".

Oh come on, there wasn't easier options without having to carry a whole pile of various hairs for hours with no aircon ? Or was it a coup from the toupet lobby ? Or just plain good old fashion ?
