Re: as simple as... potting soil
Mother Nature doesn't do that, so it doesn't seem necessary.Francis wrote:So, why don't you boil your soil ???Username Taken wrote:nothing could be further from the truth, my dear friend.Francis wrote:this is because you are no gardener
I prefer to follow Mother Nature, to make and use compost.
Read more here.Compost Benefits
Using compost as mulch, in the soil or as potting media is beneficial in many ways.
Compost contains a full spectrum of essential plant nutrients. You can test the nutrient levels in your compost and soil to find out what other supplements it may need for specific plants.
Compost contains macro and micronutrients often absent in synthetic fertilizers.
Compost releases nutrients slowly—over months or years, unlike synthetic fertilizers
Compost enriched soil retains fertilizers better. Less fertilizer runs off to pollute waterways.
Compost buffers the soil, neutralizing both acid & alkaline soils, bringing pH levels to the optimum range for nutrient availability to plants.
<snip>
Compost can reduce chemical pesticides since it contains beneficial microorganisms that may protect plants from diseases and pests.
Re: as simple as... potting soil
your a star usernametaken.... I may check them...
in aeon mall they have potting soil, at least something that remotely looks so.. in small bags, perhaps 2 liters? or 1 liter... $1...
they also have "fertilizer", little black crumps, without any explanation/description on it...
they definitely have the simple planting pots (for inside the ceramic pots). and some plants, ready potted... not bad, but all much to little...

Re: as simple as... potting soil
What you say is absolutely correct of course, except that one:
Anyway......if I ever should return to Cambodia (unlikely), I'm not going to eat your tomatoes (if you haven't boiled the soil).
because it seems to be difficult to get real compost in Cambodia you got to give mother nature a "helping hand" (sometimes you got kick mother nature in the arse).Username Taken wrote:Mother Nature doesn't do that, so it doesn't seem necessary.

Re: as simple as... potting soil
in europe, you will want to boil the soil of indoor plants.
outdoor plants it doesn't matter.
you wont boil it, cant imagine what mess that will be, you put it onto a baking sheet and run the oven at 200 degrees for 30 minutes or so...

Re: as simple as... potting soil
its all day sunny, humid, windy... things grow easily and quickly here...
at home, you have rain, no proper air circulation even on the balcony, and much too little light for most of the popular outdoor plants.
that's the source of fungus.
so, in Europe its normal to have trouble with plants and likewise is the supply on fungicids/specialised fertilizers, prepared soil and what not.
...just look at that millions of bougainvilleas here.. everywhere, out of the dirt... all year bending under the blossoms...
at home, you have to study a year, when you want to plant them and have them blooming at some weeks ...ahahaha...

Re: as simple as... potting soil
You don't eat !!!!!!! bougainvilleas, do you ???????? Toxins are a health threat and fungi (which grow very well and very fast in Cambodia) are a threat to your plants alltogether.potty wrote:...just look at that millions of bougainvilleas here.. everywhere, out of the dirt...

Re: as simple as... potting soil
a fungus needs more than "to be there" in order to grow...
plenty of moist, no air circulation and no light. otherwise, it doesn't stand a chance.
