Koh Rong: Concrete road development began. Electric grid and airport coming

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

On July 14, 2020, Royal Group Koh Rong Development Company and Sinohydro Corporation Limited held a signing ceremony for the construction of a 70-kilometer concrete road which is 8 meters wide on Koh Rong Development Area, Koh Rong City, Preah Sihanouk Province, Cambodia.

Sinohydro Corporation Limited is a Chinese state-owned hydropower engineering and construction company. In the 2012 Engineering News-Record Top 225 Global Contractors, a ranking by annual revenue, the company is 14th by overall position and 6th among Chinese construction companies.

The signing ceremony took place at the Goddess of Liberty Hotel & Resort in Sihanoukville on Tuesday, July 14, 2020, presided over by Kouch Chamroeun, Governor of Sihanoukville, Chea Vuthy, Deputy Secretary General of the Development Council; Sok Chenda Sophea, Minister of Home Affairs, Deputy Prime Minister and Secretary General.
“On Koh Rong, we will finish [road construction] in 16 months, [roads] will be available to use before the deadline; when the road is ready, we will install street lighting and build only large scale, electric grid project with the airport.”

It such a small island, I get the road, but the airport seems stupid out side of military use

Next you''ll be saying there shouldn't be a golf course or horse racing. Originally the runway was supposed to be on the rocky bit in the north-west.

Go and tell that same to people of Santorini and many other small islands whose economy depends on their airport.

Lol!!! I saw detailed plans way back in about '08/'09 when they first dished out the major round of 99 yr island concessions.
This very same group had the race track, the golf course, the condos, the casinos and the airport all beautifully laid out in architect's ink.

I still clearly remember being totally flocked-up for a while - trying to get my head around a racecourse on this stunning, pristine island i was passing on the old ferry trip to and from Koh Kong back then.

I have seen similar detailed architectural drawings for Koh Tang.
I soon worked out what many other members here would know - that grand and detailed plans are a big part of the whole land scam here. And inked-in airports are often included.

I actualy think the long term big plans, including maybe a small tourist airport, were feasible for Koh Rong - and that the timing was about right.
It is a very capable company, and personally i have no doubts about the huge porential for billions of chibolese toyorists here.
But Cv19 has blown the clock back another few years i reckon.

Still can't get my head around the race track tho'.

The first time I went there way back in 2012. There's only one hostel, electricity cuts at 9pm, clean water is rare, only one-minute shower. But it was really heaven on earth. Now it's just Chinese and their selfie sticks
