I guess this means that, assuming there are no spikes in infections between now and then, the virus will no longer be considered a major threat in Cambodia and all the schools / gyms / cinema's will have re-opened?

Surely, to have a major 5-day public holiday where people were free to travel and socialise however they pleased while still maintaining it unsafe to re-open certain establishments would be a bit beyond baffling, even for KOW.

I must assume there won't be any "clusters" or "community outbreaks" it's been almost 6 months and if the virus 'was here' surely is passed through by now, no?

The only 'new' cases will be imported ones as the flights increase. I'm still baffled though as to how anyone can leave a country only to be tested positive when landing in Cambodia.

Why would it be baffling for Khmers to enjoy a holiday with their families??? Covid is over here, and was never a threat.

I suppose that xandreu meant that it is a bit strange to announce a 5-day national public holiday while the schools and universities are still closed - officially for reasons of preventing the spread of coronavirus. He has a good point. And aren't/weren't the schools supposed to start reopening in August ?
Also, a lot of people are already on "holiday" and have been for some months now ( also called being unemployed), so where is the money going to come from for these festivities ?

I sure don't want to stop Khmers from enjoying themselves, but I am also a little baffled by the timing of the holiday. But that's not my problem. :rave: Carry on.

How do you know? They only did 38000 tests, that means the general populace wasn't tested at all.

Well Cambodia oddly may have been blessed by missing the coronavirus, the rest of the world certainly wasn't.
So party on and enjoy the celebrations!!

Don't you think that by now if it was really a problem, the hospitals would have been swamped by patients and there'd be a funeral on every corner? For whatever reason, Cambodia has been very lucky and been spared, and the restrictions they've put in place on arrivals is pretty strict. And I'm someone who was once quite sure it would sweep through the country, considering the markets, intergenerational families living closely together, street food and hygiene standards which, let's face it, could definitely be improved.

Just what the economy needs, a 5 day shutdown. And what about all the Phnom Penh dwellers struggling to make a living and facing going home to the village with empty pockets?

If you miss a NYE, it's gone and is never coming back. Just wait until the next one.
