Cambodia News (Banteay Meanchey): On July 10, 2020, a 37-year-old woman, Doung Sokhunthea, from Phnom Srok district, Banteay Meanchey, filed a complaint at the police station after getting scammed by a man who she met on social media.

The victim said that she had known the man named Veansa, a handsome businessman, on social media for nearly a year. They were "just good friends", and although she never met him in person, she considered that he was like a brother to her.

On July 5, 2020, the suspect used a phone no.098 268 3400 to contact the woman and asked to borrow 8,100 USD. He said that he had been caught trafficking illegal timber, so he needed 8,100 USD, and he agreed to pay her 5000 Baht per day as interest. The woman agreed, and she transferred the money to him via Wing.

However, the next day when she tried to contact her friend on social media, he blocked her. It was then that she realized that her online 'friend' was just a scammer, so she contacted the police.

Maybe because there is huge money to be had in logging? A square meter of some woods can cost $10,000+. The door behind her is nothing special. I've been in some houses (not many) where the whole place is paneled from floor to ceiling with carvings made from precious wood. Then the stairs are made out of huge pieces of lumber and there are huge wooden statues and those giant vase things. Sometimes it's made of this very expensive knotted and mottled wood.

Even though the carving is done well it has this overall look of the Queen's lair from Alien. It's often badly fitted too with gaps and edges that don't meet. It makes me feel sad to think that so many magnificent trees and forests have gone into making some gauche interiors for concrete villas that will probably be replaced as soon as the owner gets bored.

This country needs to diversify the tourist industry, temples are great but unspoiled rain forests have huge potential too if they could be preserved. I don't really get these "eco resorts" where they carve the whole natural environment to pieces, level it and then put in a few potted plants. 8-)

i know all this

i'm implying there was possibly a hard-wood relationship between parties, as in actual wood
eg she paid a much-too-low $8k for a giger bedstead grotesque
and the scammer claimed he got caught in transit

:Search: I'm trying to imagine how this went :
" Dear sister, Unfortunately my $$$ load of illegal timber that I was transporting from Cambodian protected forests has been held up by the authorities, who are asking the small price of $8,100 to release it. Please send me this small amount of money immediately and I will repay you with lots of interest on your loan.Your sincere brother in Christ.
God Bless You and Keep you."
Lol, sounds familiar. Just call him Prince Hansum.

you don't expect her to tell the cops she is implicated in illegal logging do you? :D I agree and understood your first post when I read it. There's more to this story.
Still here, in country...
