Children Found with Nutritional Deficiencies; Parents Accuse Infant Formula Nutrilatt
July 10, 2020
Outrage over infant formula milk powder
At least 17 parents have complained to the Health Ministry that their infants’ health have been adversely affected after having been fed with Nutrilatt formula milk powder.
In a petition sent earlier this week, the parents claimed their children suffered from anaemia and iron deficiency and urged the ministry to re-examine the quality of the milk powder.
One of the parents, Srey Chan Sothany, said yesterday: “My three siblings who use the Nutrilatt milk powder have also found that their infants suffered from anemia and iron deficiency after being fed with the milk product. The conditions of my son and two nephews were so severe that they had to have blood transfusions.”
According to the petition submitted to Health Minister Mam Bun Heng on Monday, the parents claimed they had sufficient proof to back their claim, including their children’s medical history and their doctors’ reports.
“A detailed discussion with a blood specialist also confirmed that our children were affected by the milk powder, Nutrilatt, which was distributed by S&TK Trading Co Ltd” Sothany said.
The milk powder product came into the spotlight in early May after a group of mothers were informed by the National Children’s Hospital and Kantha Bopha Hospital that their children suffered severe iron deficiency and anaemia after being fed daily with Nutrilatt milk powder.
“The children’s sickness were caused because the milk power contained insufficient nutrients, contrary to what was advertised in the media,” the 17 parents claimed in their petition.
Tim Sovannara, general manager of Nutrilatt in Cambodia, told local media on Tuesday the company has been informed about the ongoing issue and took immediate action to re-examine samples of four types of the milk powder, both in Cambodia and Malaysia and had submitted all test results to the Ministry of Health.
The company also recommended that parents who claim to be affected by the formula milk should wait for action from the Ministry of Health on whether or not the product should be retained.
Health Ministry spokesman Ly Sovann could not be reached for comment yesterday.

Re: Children Found with Nutritional Deficiencies; Parents Accuse Infant Formula Nutrilatt
It is an Amway product. Big.
I google the product, +deficiecies, complaints
for both Malaysia and for Singapore
Amongst the flood of promotional material i found 5 sites that seemed to have negative stories about this product - along the lines of the report above.
Interestingly, all 5 sites were blocked or unavailable.
It is also pretty obvious that they pepper the internet with glowing reports from supposedly unaligned nutricianists who of course all highly recomond this product.

I say that if your kids are so anemic that they need multiple blood transfusions then there are bigger problems in their home life than a change of baby formula can fix.

Re: Children Found with Nutritional Deficiencies; Parents Accuse Infant Formula Nutrilatt
Might have nothing to do with it but reminds me of a doco I saw years ago of malnutrition in Africa. Coz of the high costs of baby formula, mothers were skimping on the numbers of spoons of formula they mixed with water. Basically, would put just enogh until the water went milky white and they thought that was enough. I hope that's not the case here.
Re: Children Found with Nutritional Deficiencies; Parents Accuse Infant Formula Nutrilatt
If a mother can't breast feed (and there are many legit medical reasons why that is sometimes the case), the kid's formula is going to be their only source of nutrition until they are old enough to start eating food. With that in mind, I don't get your point.Jerry Atrick wrote: ↑Fri Jul 10, 2020 1:55 pm I say that if your kids are so anemic that they need multiple blood transfusions then there are bigger problems in their home life than a change of baby formula can fix.

Nutrilatt baby formula ‘iron deficient’
Voun Dara | Publication date 26 August 2020 | 22:21 ICT
The General Department of Consumer Protection, Competition and Fraud Repression (CPCFR) is calling for a civil settlement for consumers who purchased Nutrilatt milk powder for their babies.
It is also asking the Ministry of Commerce to stop the distribution of the baby formula.
The CPCFR alleges the iron content in Nutrilatt is lower than the company’s declaration and international coding standards. It presented laboratory findings on Wednesday to back its claims.
The presentation was made by CPCFR director-general Phan Oun with participation from parents, representatives of Nutrilatt, WHO, UNICEF, Helen Keller International and representatives of the Maternal and Child Health Centre at the Ministry of Health.
Oun told The Post that six batches were analysed by Eurofins Food Testing Singapore Pte Ltd, an independent and internationally accredited laboratory in Singapore.
The results show the iron contained in the milk powder was lower than the company’s declaration and the Codex International Standard.
“We want a civil settlement for victims if the company agrees to deal with the parents of the affected babies. But if the company does not agree, we will send the case to court,” he said.
Oun said CPCFR would also advise commerce ministry officials to check the milk powder and confiscate the products.
Iron deficiency in infants who use this formula may lead to anaemia, fatigue and weak bodies, he said.
Oun said 16 families of infants have had problems after using the formula and asked CPCFR for a solution.

Re: Children Found with Nutritional Deficiencies; Parents Accuse Infant Formula Nutrilatt
There is no substitute for mother’s milk. But good quality formula is good enough. My son was raised on formula but began eating solids at 8 weeks. Not recommended but it worked. It is well known that many formulas are deficient in critical elements. Third world parents and babies are usually the victims.
This is why Chinese buy huge quantities of formula in Australia and ship it home. It’s known to be quality. One kiwi manufacturer put Chinese characters on their label, no one would buy it. Remember the Chinese company who put melamine in their formula?

Wasn’t there a big hoonhaa about a formula company who gave free milk to mothers in Africa and made a huge thing about it but then a charity pointed out there was a lack of clean drinking water?
They quietly withdrew the offer.
Similac is about $15 more expensive than Nutrilatt. You get what you pay for.

UPDATE
Nutrilatt given one month to settle dispute with parents
Voun Dara | Publication date 06 October 2020 | 23:21 ICT
After discussions on Monday and Tuesday between representatives of Nutrilatt, an importer of milk powder products, and parents of children affected through the use of its product, the Ministry of Commerce’s General Department of Consumer Protection, Competition and Fraud Prevention gave the two parties one month to settle the matter out of court.
Department director-general Phan Oun told The Post on Tuesday that families filing complaints against Nutrilatt had increased from 16 to 24.
“We are giving them time to tackle this, while the solution by a prosecutor is the next step. We gave the company one month to build a report to check and give compensation to those parents. They may solve it like that,” he said.
Parents using six batch types (487, 488, 536, 537, 538, 539) of Nutrilatt’s milk powder reported that it gave their babies anaemia and iron deficiencies.
They then filed complaints with the Ministry of Health, and the Ministry of Commerce’s General Department of Consumer Protection, Competition and Fraud Prevention in July and August.
After receiving the news on August 26, the General Department showed the results of the analysis of the six batches of milk powder.
Analysis performed by independent and internationally accredited laboratory Eurofins Food Testing Singapore Pte Ltd showed that the iron levels in the milk powder were lower than that stated by the company and lower than what the Codex International Standard stipulates.
