Cambodia's Jobless Should Take Up Farming Says Minister
Cambodia encourages unemployed people to take up farming
VNA Sunday, July 05, 2020 15:37
Phnom Penh (VNA) – Cambodia’s Agriculture Ministry has ordered its officials across the country to hold campaigns to encourage people made jobless during the COVID-19 pandemic to take up farming, Khmer Times reported July 4.
In a letter signed earlier this week, Agriculture Minister Veng Sakhon outlined measures which need to be taken to boost the agricultural sector during border lockdowns triggered by the coronavirus.
He said the agricultural sector is key to kick-starting the country’s economy during these hard times.
Cambodia’s economy has been hurt by the disease and may decrease to 1.9 percent in 2020, the letter said.
Sakhon asked officials to encourage people to do farming by providing support on farming techniques and also provide solutions to problems they may encounter.
He said the campaign is aimed at improving the employment rates and livelihoods of people, especially migrant workers who have returned to their home provinces during the pandemic.
Last month, Cambodian Prime Minister HE told the launch of the Cash Transfer Programme for Poor and Vulnerable Households during COVID-19 that his government has decided to allocate about 100 million USD to develop rural infrastructure and provide employment opportunities for rural people./.

Step 1.
Grab land.
Step 2.
Set Up special economic zones giving out extremely cheap long term leases for large agricultural corporations.
Step 3.
Order the people without jobs to go farming.
The question is... where. Anyone aware of large plots of unused land ready to be used by the unemployed?

Well see what they need is to get everyone to leave the cities because of no work and go and start farming out in the countryside but of course the problem is going to be all those trendy lefties with their smart ideas trying to ruin the whole thing so something will have to be done about them.,.....oh wait forget it they already tried all that, didn't work.

Two posters before me have got it bang right. But with that kind of money in the kitty its a good start. In past years farmers have been priced out of many products, or rather produce, one of the best examples being the pork industry where importers controlled the market by volume and price. Looking now being the country has its own export market, would be the first change, being is there large lands, one - the rich land owners could now be getting there lands developed into farming. Two - there is a lot of government land, and that makes sense, money back to the kitty and government run and owned, in house.
Always "hope" but never "expect".

Most people in government [ throughout this world ] that give advice on farming, the land and land products, have the wrong type of ''dirt '' on their hands. Turning over a sod of dirt with a new silver plated spade in front of cameras and newspaper reporters does not make one qualified to give advice to riel farmers.
Cambodia,,,, Don't fall in love with her.
Like the spoilt child she is, she will not be happy till she destroys herself from within and breaks your heart.

They already are! Many many people who have lost their jobs in Siem Reap have returned to their family farms and to subsistence living. Cambodians are fortunate to have family networks to help each other during hard times.

The Thai government has been pushing the same thing, I question who is really pushing this OG CCP economic advice when a lot of SE-Asias farms are struggling due to the natural flow of the Mekong being controlled upstream.

Those family farms have been in use before too, only in better times they put in less effort and they planted low maintenance crops like cassava. Maybe now they changed to veggies.
