Know any builder team who can do Khmer wooden houses?

Hi everyone,

I am set to build a small wooden house in the Khmer style. Now facing two questions: 1. where to find a team of builders, as I saw some of these new houses being built every year in provincial Cambodia there must be professionals who handle the work; 2. I'm planning to use reclaimed timber as it can be less costly and more environment friendly, are there any contacts who know where to buy?

Find a translator and head out into the provinces! In addition you could create a written invitation to bid and give it to people you meet (but probably not require them to reply in writing as that could be a major barrier)

Do you know how much it costs for 1 room bungalow style ? less than 40 sqm ?
And isn't it cheaper to build a standard house ? Wood is usually expensive !

I'm doing something like this, did hand drawings and asked around for a bit, got two quotations now, slightly more costly than I expected at the moment.

I have a team of guys who can build khmer style houses in Siem Reap. I can show you two wooden houses they have built recently. Bear in mind however that a real Khmer wooden house is a fairly dodgy construction. Are you looking for a more modernized khmer style house? It can be done very cheaply - they are doing one at present (but with steel framing) for around $3,000.

Looks like any rice farmer or moto-dop can build a wooden house.

Here are the two houses. As Duncan has said not a huge amount of skill is needed to build them. They are not like the old hand-made traditional teak wood Thai houses. They were both built with old wood which is obtainable pretty cheaply.

Will do. Going to start land filling next week, as I was told by my neighbour villagers that the Mekong can flood and my land can be under water by half a meter, not very good news.
