I believe that over 30 days overstay could get you locked up with the new rules pre- Pandemic. However the immigration centers are getting packed with hopeless people from countries that won't facilitate their return so the guards are getting bored of feeding illegals out of their own budget. Basically they are rammed. The only thing in the guys favor is that they aren't actively looking for broke barangs at the moment.

I overstayed a couple of times, one time because I was waiting on a new passport which was was a 30 day X $5 thing and the last time because I was a dumbass and forgot my extension was up for renewal by a month. I get them paid for by work but they weren't paying for that $300 mistake of mine. I wonder how people who let them expire for years manage? It's not unusual to be asked for credentials and up to date papers here. It's getting more bureaucratic all the time, I can comply with most stuff but it's just annoying as hell when I have to keep giving the same documents up ten f@cking times a year.

If you racked up a huge overstay fee and decided a midnight kayak run from Koh Kong Island over to Koh Chang might be the only financially feasible way out - is there any way you could make that work with Thailand immigration?

"Lost my passport"? etc
I realise they would not have Immigration records of your non-arrival by normal channels, but is there any get-around?

Thailand would charge you with illegal entry. That could end up being cheaper than settling the overstay in Cambodia, as a low-ish fine plus deportation is the most likely outcome (for a first time offender).

Not recommended if you want to spend time in either Cambodia or Thailand in the future though, I'd guess. I don't know what will happen in Cambodia if you rock up again at some point when your immigration records indicate you're still there.

Some bar owner did that. Got nicked for procuring girls got banged up got released made his way to Thailand illegally then we never heard anything more. I think his daddy bailed him out (again) and he flew home to mummy.

An overstaying-for-years buddy of mine just threw away his passport and got a new one from his embassy and then told immigration he had arrived three weeks earlier.

They couldn't find his entry record in the system and couldn't see how long his overstay really was, so they just let him go.

It happened in 2019. He had arrived in 2016.

Yea I find that extremely difficult to believe. The DoI have a very comprehensive computer database which has been in use well before 2016.
