Acting Chief Monk Commits Suicide at Pagoda
Cambodia News, Pursat: According to the Krakor district police report, the victim, Chum Phon, a 72-year-old Cambodian national, was acting as acting chief monk when his body was found hanging at his pagoda in Wat Thmey village, Thnat Chum commune, Krakor district, Pursat province. The incident of his death at 6:00 am on 23 June 2020 surprised the pagoda authorities when it was discovered at dawn.
According to Yon Young, a 73-year-old male, a Buddhist monk at Wat Buddha (aka Wat Ra) who knew the victim for a long time, said that Chum Phon was suffering from a physical illness and was in pain much of the time.
On June 23, 2020, at 6:30 am, he sent his student, Hun Mesa, to call the monks in the dormitory for a meal, and he found the old monk hanging in the bathroom with a hammock around his neck, already deceased.
The commune chief, Thmorum Chum, and local police officials said that the reason for the monk's death was that he suffered from a physical ailment, so he decided to end his life.
After a careful examination of the deceased, the body was given to the victim's family for a traditional funeral. RIP.
