Sihanoukville was popular with tourist because of what it was,,, not because of what it could be.
Cambodia,,,, Don't fall in love with her.
Like the spoilt child she is, she will not be happy till she destroys herself from within and breaks your heart.

Looks like an engineer's wet dream: asphalt, glass, steel and concrete.

Quite right, there are much better options for that style of place in the region, with much better infrastructure/sanitation etc. Sihanoukville's charm that served locals and tourists well was the laid back basic nature of it with a lot of untouched beauty. Progress is no bad thing but I don't see this as progress, at the expense of destroying a truly beautiful corner of the earth.
Scratch beneath the surface of those Statistics and it will tell you that was all because of the casino boom and Chinese tourists. Now that a lot of those Casinos are closing due to the ban on online gambling + a lot of half stalled construction, what will be the USP for Sihanoukville? It has lost the western crowds, maybe in another 5 years when the roads and infrastructure are there and the construction noise and dust and sewage stops going into the sea,it may win them back. However, for now and the foreseeable future it is a town built on the bet that Chinese will continue to flock there. It has certainly lost the "most beautiful bays in the world" tag line.rogerrabbit wrote: ↑Sun Jun 21, 2020 5:59 pm
Statistics doesn't really indicate that. Sihanoukville visitor numbers have doubled from 2014 to 2019.

They may as well go ahead and officially change the name to West Port and allow Sihanoukville to just be a faded memory of days gone by.
Personally, I much preferred Kompong Saom. Lovely little place.

Tourist is a tourist really. It has lost the past crowds for sure, but that crowd was really small. Not enough to give food for a city of size of Sihanoukville.angkorjohn2 wrote: ↑Sun Jun 21, 2020 6:33 pmQuite right, there are much better options for that style of place in the region, with much better infrastructure/sanitation etc. Sihanoukville's charm that served locals and tourists well was the laid back basic nature of it with a lot of untouched beauty. I think you haven't been in a city this year? Roads and infra works not far from completion and there are only handful of stalled construction. And my guess is many of those will continue once the chinese come back (which has already started btw). And in my opinion Sihanoukville never was beautiful. It's been pretty much a "shitville" always with overpriced guesthouses, tuktuks and food. Thanks to the past developments, 2/3 of those has been atleast fixed,

Yes sir, I haven't been in pretty much exactly a year. I went several times in 2019 for business reasons and couldn't believe the destruction of the place and how the once happy residents all looked quite sad and demoralised which struck a melancholy chord with me, the constant noise, the ripped up roads and constant traffic jams, along with the multiple Chinese owned restaurants that refused entry to Khmers. It was all very sad to see from a place that used to be so peaceful , I accept the main town was always fairly shit but the unnecessary destruction of Otres 1 &2 was heartbreaking to see. I am glad to hear it is improving infrastructure wise but is this also for the locals? especially with the clampdown on food carts that was reported. To be honest I have seen no pictures or reports to show this only CGI mock ups. It would be good to see some if you have any.rogerrabbit wrote: ↑Sun Jun 21, 2020 7:52 pmTourist is a tourist really.
