Re: Desperate Cambodian Workers Caught Crossing Thai Border Daily
Given the number of Thais likely unemployed in the service sector I would expect a contraction in the need for migrant labour. I realise the construction sector is probably one of if not the biggest employer of migrant Burmese and Cambodians and Thais may not want to get their hands dirty for poorer pay, but I wonder how much that sector will slow down anyway in the current climate.

In a nation run by swine, all pigs are upward-mobile and the rest of us are fucked until we can put our acts together: not necessarily to win, but mainly to keep from losing completely. HST

Eight Cambodians arrested for alleged illegal entry, along with Thai driver
Oct 16. 2020
By THE NATION
Eight undocumented Cambodian nationals have been arrested for allegedly entering the country illegally, enabled by a Thai man who helped transport them near the Thai-Cambodian border in the Khok Soong district of Sa Kaeo province.
Pol Colonel Thapanon Nongphong, chief of Region 12 Border Patrol Police, said that his unit in cooperation with Ta Phraya Special Taskforce had made the arrests on Thursday.
“Border patrol police had been alerted to a suspicious motorcycle modified into a tricycle running on Ban Khok Mai Ngam Road, about 10km from the Thai-Cambodian border, while carrying an unknown number of people,” he said. “We deployed a roadblock and stopped the vehicle, which was driven by Suriya Cherdkrathok, aged 40, a local of Khok Soong district.”
Thapanon added that there were eight Cambodian passengers in the vehicle, three males and five females, none whom had proper documentation that allowed entrance into Thailand.

It may be, Rich, that Thai employers just do not want to pay wages appropriate to their countries wealth.phuketrichard wrote: ↑Mon Oct 05, 2020 12:08 pm tons of construction here in phuket;

We hear lots of garbage like that in Oz (not saying your words were BS, Rich) and i am sure it is repeated all over the planet.
- "Aussies just don't want to do hard work like picking fruit"
BS!! they always have and always will
Employers just don't want to pay fair, award rate, wages and the other legal entitlements.
IMO, no country should import workers to lower wage pressures.
If a nation can't pay the lowest workers commiserate to the country's wealth they should not be able to exploit foreign desperates - and rip off their own citizens in the process.
Post WWII all over the world has demonstrated that a nation that pays fair wages BOOMS.
Economics #101
ps, many of my wife's family works in Thailand and the whole family benefits as a result - hugely.
But it is still exploitation, and this system is still ripping off working class Thais.

No room at the inn for Cambodian migrant workers...
Cambodia News, Banteay Meanchey Province: On 25 December, 2020, Cambodian families with no work and no money were found camping in Thailand, close to the Thai-Cambodian border. They were arrested and taken into custody by a Thai border patrol who then handed the 52 people over to the Cambodian authorities to be repatriated.
The group of Cambodians comprised of families with women and young children from Siem Reap. They say that they were desperate to find jobs to feed their families.
The Cambodian authorities also said that the above 52 Cambodian workers were closely monitored by district health officials, but no one has a worrying high temperature.
After questioning, all Cambodian workers were sent by car to the checkpoint to bedocumented and put in quarantine for 14 days by the police and local authorities.

Re: Desperate Cambodian Workers Caught Crossing Thai Border Daily
Cambodia News (Battambang): A man and a woman who were involved in smuggling 36 people to Thailand were arrested on January 19, 2021, at 2:20 am. A 45-year-old man, Pat Mao, was arrested in Komrieng district, Battambang.
According to lieutenant Kim Ponlok, after receiving a suspect from border 819, on January 19, 2021, at 4 pm, the police questioned him. The suspect confessed that on January 18, 2021, a woman called him to take a group of people to work in Thailand, but she didn't tell him how many people. He just knew that he would get 10,000 riels per person. Then, he went to the Son Sen border, in Ouanlong village, Kampong district, and saw two cars.
At 2:20 am, on January 19, 2021, the man took the workers from the cars and led them to walk across the border, but he got arrested by Thai police. The suspect said he worked for a woman named Pen Samorn, 41 years old, but she denied everything, saying that she doesn't know the man, and she doesn't know anything about smuggling people to Thailand.
The police arrested the two suspects according to the order of Mr. Ky Bunanara, the prosecutor. The 36 workers have been educated and sent home.

From THAILAND.
16 Cambodians arrested for illegal entry
Jan 21. 2021
Sixteen Cambodian nationals were arrested by two teams of patrolling police officers after entering the country via Sa Kaeo province without any documentation, Natural Resources and Environmental Crime Division police announced on Wednesday.
One of the teams arrested seven Cambodians on Highway No 359 in Sa Kaeo’s Watthana Nakhon district. They were in a pickup truck driven by Ong-art Todtasee, aged 44, a local of Maha Sarakham province. Ong-art reportedly confessed that he was hired by a company in Pattaya to transport the Cambodian workers to Sa Kaeo. Each was to pay Bt600 for being helped across the border to Cambodia.
They were taken to Muang Sa Kaeo police station, where Ong-art was charged with aiding illegal migrants and the seven charged with entering the country without proper documentation.
The other team of police discovered nine Cambodians stranded in a forest in Khao Chakan district. An initial investigation revealed they were abandoned after their employer evaded a crackdown on illegal migrants. The nine were also taken to Muang Sa Kaeo police station and charged with entering the country illegally.
Police are tracking down the employer.

Re: Desperate Cambodian Workers Caught Crossing Thai Border Daily
My ex- wife (Thai) and her sister would drive to Sa Kaeo when it was time to harvest their sugar. They had the same migrant workers year after year, but they would pick them up on the Thai side at night time.
Always "hope" but never "expect".
