More Cambodian migrants were arrested by Thai soldiers while crossing the border into Thailand on 28 September, including a kid.
Cambodia News, (Banteay Meanchey): The seven Cambodian workers, two males, four females and a young boy, were arrested by Thai soldiers of the 1205th Regiment on September 28, 2020 at the border Aranya district, Sa Kaeo province.
The seven Cambodian male and female workers were detained by Thai black-clad soldiers at the Poipet border crossing as they tried to sneak across the border illegally to seek work in Thailand .
According to a local Thai newspaper, the seven villagers told Thai authorities that because of the Covid-19 problem, they were all unemployed and their families were in need, so they were forced to cross the border, because they have no work and no money.

Re: Desperate Cambodian Workers Caught Crossing Thai Border Daily
This so sad. These people look so defeated.
The Thai and Cambodian governments need to step up and organize a quarantine system with testing for migrant workers at the border. The Thais need labour and the Cambodians need work. Keeping the borders closed indefinitely is not the answer. It just creates more illegal immigration, and possible spread of the virus. Fast testing should be available soon, and if you can use it on the tourists, you can also test the migrant workers.
Even better would be if conditions in Cambodia were better, so they don't have to leave at all, but ...

It would be a better all round solution if the governments allowed the workers over the borders with testing, but it may also be that of a problem and cost too the Thais if the workers would be subjected to 14 days quarantine.Anchor Moy wrote: ↑Wed Sep 30, 2020 1:00 am This so sad. Even if conditions were better in Cambodia, there would be still movement of migrant workers, you only have to look for examples of that in first world countries, it just may mean travel is longer distances.

Re: Desperate Cambodian Workers Caught Crossing Thai Border Daily
Cambodia News: According to the Thai-Cambodian authorities, the Thai border guards in Aranyaprathet district, Sa Kaeo province, stopped a Nissan car, with license plate 2447 Chhun Borey, driven by a Cambodian man named Yeung Borey, male, 39 years old, on 29 September.
A search of the car turned up four Cambodian nationals with no history of entry and exit to Thailand and related documents. Thai authorities sent the five Cambodians to the Aranyaprathet police station for legal action.
The explanation of the Cambodian workers was that because in the Covid-19 restrictions, they were unemployed, and since the family faced a food shortage, they decided to cross the border illegally to find work in Thailand using illegal border brokers, but now that they are arrested by Thai police, this is a new disaster for them.

LEGAL migrants have been allowed back into thailand for almost 2 months
https://www.khmertimeskh.com/50752380/t ... t-workers/
Problem is to get legal, means you need an employer in Thailand so you can apply for an L-A Visa
OR you register with an agent, who handles everything for ya.

Re: Desperate Cambodian Workers Caught Crossing Thai Border Daily
Well, I'm wondering whether this is still the case. Their own locals are doing it tough economically and out of work and maybe they don't need the migrant workers so much anymore.Anchor Moy wrote: ↑Wed Sep 30, 2020 1:00 am The Thai and Cambodian governments need to step up and organize a quarantine system with testing for migrant workers at the border. Re: Desperate Cambodian Workers Caught Crossing Thai Border Daily
There has always been a river of workers illegally crossing into Thailand from Koh Kong
- from a number of (immigration cop manned) "illegal" border crossings in the forest north of Cham Yeam , the official crossing.
Before Covid. Before and after ASEAN "open borders". Always was and forever shall be.
The immigration cops don't have to send there cut to the national Gov,(most of it goes to the local big brass) so it is cheaper. Any cheaper price makes a huge difference for these poor migrant workers.
My best friend is a boatman who has always made his living speeding overloaded small boats 20 k upstream to the crossings.
I have taken my wife up there myself, it's just the way she has always gone to visit her family and friends who work in Trat.
(see photos)
Much more relaxed too. Still an "office building" and an immigration guy sitting at school desk. No paperwork.
Friendly, relaxed, no shame or secrets to a barang.
(although the price i am told would be far far higher if i ever needed to quietly slip away myself. But do-able, maybe)
It is the endless flow of Thai fishing fleet fodder that upsets me the most. I know the horrors some of those poor eager hopeful young rice farmer kids are going to find at the end of their rainbow.

This will probably deter a lot of Cambodian workers who wish to return to Malaysia:
https://www.phnompenhpost.com/national/ ... hefty-feesThe Cambodian Embassy in Malaysia announced last week that students and workers, including those who have permanent or temporary residence in that country and wish to return, must pay a MYR4,700 ($1,150) fee.

Allow return of migrant workers, Thailand urged
Voun Dara | Publication date 04 October 2020 | 23:02 ICT
Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Minister Prak Sokhonn asked the Thai government to allow Cambodian migrant workers to return there to help reduce quarantine costs.
Sokhonn made the request via a video conference with his Thai counterpart Don Pramudwinai on Friday.
The two discussed bilateral relations and cooperation and regional and global issues of common interest and concern.
“The Kingdom asked the Thais to allow Cambodian workers who hold border passes to return to work and reduce the cost of the 14-day quarantine,” Sokhonn said.
Sokhonn thanked the Thai authorities for the renewal of stay and work permits for Cambodians and for increasing unemployment and social benefits for those who had their jobs suspended.
He also noted Thailand’s investment flow into Cambodia has tripled in the first eight months of the year, compared to last year, and encouraged more Thai investment in Cambodia.
Both sides noted significant progress in other sectors such as security, education, tourism, and energy, said a press release.
It said the two sides are interested in increased cross-border trade, including Cambodian agricultural products, and expediting the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Goods in Transit.
Both sides said they were satisfied with the opening of new regional and international border checkpoints and the upgrading of existing regional checkpoints to international border checkpoints.
Centre for Alliance of Labour and Human Rights executive-director Moeun Tola said Thailand is still closed and jobs are not yet stable.
That is why Cambodian migrant workers continue returning to Cambodia, Tola said.
“So, if what our Ministry of Foreign Affairs requested from the Thai side is successful, it is good. But we are not optimistic because the Thai side doesn’t need workers. If and when they do, Cambodian workers need jobs,” he said.
