Police Urged to Monitor Social Media "Fake News"

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

I wonder if they are going to arrest this guy? Seems an open and shut case. On March 29 he claimed:

PP Governor denies Phnom Penh will be locked down

Phnom Penh Governor Khuong Sreng denied that the capital will be shut down to stem the spread of COVID-19, saying it was fake news.

The City Hall said police are searching for those spreading fake news on social media about the capital’s lockdown.

The reaction came after a voice message was shared on social media that authorities will close all entrances to Phnom Penh to prevent the spread of the February 20 community event.

“I would like to inform the public that the entry and exit of Phnom Penh is as usual. There is no shutdown in place. And what was circulated was false information. The Phnom Penh administration would like to reject this news,” Sreng told local media. “Now, the competent authorities are investigating this case.”

Authorities Say that Information Posted on Social Media about Escaped Chinese was False
Image
Cambodia News, (Phnom Penh): The Information and Quick Reaction Team of the Phnom Penh Municipal Police on June 11, 2021, came out and completely rejected the posting of the video shared on the social network TikTok which claimed that there was a case of Chinese people fleeing quarantine at a construction company in the Boeung Kak area.

According to the Phnom Penh Municipal Police Information and Quick Reaction Team, after receiving the information posted on the TikTok social network, the team immediately contacted the Daun Penh District Police Inspector and Post to conduct a search and inspect the location.
Image
Daun Penh District Unity Command, led by Daun Penh District Governor Sok Penh Vuth and Daun Penh District Police Inspector Colonel Teang Chansar and Srah Chak Police Chief, inspected the construction company in Boeung Kak Village, Village 2, Srah Chak Commune, Daun Penh District. The authorities did a head count of the workers quarantined at the site, and found that it was correct.

After further investigation into this allegation, the authorities say that the 'escape vehicle' in the Tiktok report belongs to a Cambodian man who stopped to urinate in the wasteland opposite the quarantine site.
Currently, the competent authorities of the Phnom Penh Municipal Police are searching for the owner of the TikTok account who posted this false information to come and clarify this post.
