Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. That would explain a bit indeed. But he is away since a while already, 4 years if not mistaken ?

Maybe Thailand are cashing in an old chip. They refused permission for Sam Rainsy to enter Thailand last November so maybe this is the return favour.

Now that's a conspiracy theory and unhelpful speculation!!

Yeah, but look at the actual list and it's not exactly impressive. Plus, if you can get there easily, so can the Thai hitmen. And if he'd been kidnapped in say, Germany, you can rest assured a thorough investigation would have performed, further dissuading any action against him.

UNHCR goodwill ambassador Praya Lundberg has refused to do anything to raise awareness of the abduction of Thai refugee Wanchalearm Satsaksit in Cambodia. She says the issue is political and so she can’t get involved.

But she had no problem meeting Thai dictator Prayut Chan-ocha in 2017, saying it was a “true honor” and praising him for “generously hosting refugees”.

Will this merely be shifted from the first page to the 5th page to no longer reported and anther disappearance is added to the list?

BREAKING NEWS:

Cambodia agrees to investigate Wanchalerm’s disappearance
Jun 09. 2020
By The Nation
Cambodia has agreed to investigate the disappearance of Thai pro-democracy activist Wanchalerm Satsaksit, who was abducted from a Phnom Penh street on June 4, spokesperson for the Cambodian national police, Chhay Kim Khoeun, told Agence France-Presse on Tuesday (June 9).

Human Rights Watch cited witnesses and security camera footage showing the 37-year-old critic of the Thai military government, being bundled into a car by armed men.

Thai police have denied any involvement, saying they do not know of Wanchalerm’s whereabouts, while the Foreign Ministry spokesperson has contacted the Thai Embassy in Phnom Penh asking for more information.

Wanchalerm’s family, meanwhile, has issued a public request asking the abductors to release the man as soon as possible, despite rumours that he may have been killed.

Rights defenders and democracy supporters are also pressuring the Thai government to seriously investigate the case.

Unfortunately the state terrorism of abducting people has no counterforce but the news channels and social media. Governments can basically abduct anyone anywhere unless the target person has enough funds to keep up a private army for self defence. Telling the truth and/or critizizing the actual guys in power has been a dangerous task since the romans and probably even before.
Mandela served 27 years in prison with every possible effort done to free him up. Just guess how the world will react on a thai boy missing. Its disgusting but hard truth.

They're also not exactly "hot on the heels" of the abductors by agreeing to start an investigation days after the initial kidnapping.

It would be interesting to watch a rerun of the very first Friday night of Prayut's address to the people after the junta staged their coup a few years ago. How hollow all those promises will seem now given what has happened since, especially in relation to freedom of speech abd any democratic dissent. Absolutely shocking case, it appears they can get away with anything.
Yes sir, I can boogie, I can boogie, boogie, boogie all night long.
